Re: The psychology of descending

The thing I found about descending is to remember to turn the pedals occasionally. In France last year we descended 1100m. in 10km, an average of over10% with many hairpins, so not especially quick. At the bottom my legs were seized up.

I ask because some weeks back I got a repeat puncture even when I was convinced the tube was good. The culprit was the smallest flint embedded in the tyre, which even by running my fingers around the inside repeatedly, could not be detected. But it was there. :(

Yes I had that, didnt puncture till I rode on it. And even then just caused a slow puncture.

Re: servicing a bike

Have a look on you tube, pretty well anything you can do to repair or maintain a bike can be found on there.

Re: Bar Bags on Drop Bars

I've fitted the klick fix extender on my Dawes audax and it works ok. Cables rub on side of bar bag but not enough to matter.
Not that I'm overfond of bar bags because of the effect on bike handling with any weight in the bag.

Re: Back spasms?

The fact that your after a short while suggests muscle cramp rather than a disc slip or more usually a pinched nerve. That leaves you out of action for weeks rather than minutes. I've experienced it several times and no way does the pain go away quickly. As to what is causing the muscle cramp, like others I would go to the docs.

Re: Berghaus Tents

Its heavier than I would want if touring solo. Should be able to get less than 2kg with enough room for 1 plus gear.

Re: sram 10 speed

Thanks for help so far. I'd sort of figured that I'd need a long cage derailier, its the 105 10sp. sti that really concerns me. If that dosent work with the sram cassette its £200 or so to change it.
Best info. I've seen so far is conflicting. It certainly dosent seem straightfoward.

sram 10 speed

Am I correct in thinking sram have produced a 10 speed cassette with a 12 to 32 range. If so does anyone know if it can be used with a shimano 105 set up ie. 10 sp. sti and 105 derailier.

Re: About Dahon folders?

I got a Dahon Mu P8 a few months ago and have done about 600 miles on it so far. Really like it, it handles well.
Used it on a tour recently where i got the train out and cycled back at about 50 miles a day and a nights camping.
Fully loaded with gear it was hard work on the hills but still handled well.
I would happily use it on solo tours, where you can poddle along at your own pace.

Re: Derby to Dudley

Youv'e only got the last 5 or 6 miles on canal and its a good surface, better than a lot of roads today, either tarmac or firm gravel. Done it on 25 mm tyres on audax bike no problem.
The rest is good purpose made city cycle routes.
Go for it !!

Re: Derby to Dudley

I would use the cycle rt 54 and 5 to chasewater then down to walsall and down through sandwell park, then pick up the canal at smethwick turning right at dudley port brings you to the black country museum and dudley centre. Canals and cycle routes in brum. area are generally very good. You can get just about anywhere without much busy road use.

Re: Panniers for fold up bikes

I use a Altura rack bag on a Dahon, it has side pockets which unzip and clip down to make small side panniers. Been on first camping trip with and it works fine. because the rack sits low it leaves room to strap tent etc. on top of the bag.
