Re: Bernard Newman cycle author, spy, etc.

Newman was a very interesting character. During the War he cycled all over the UK giving public lectures for the Ministry of Information. Some of these attracted audiences of up to 2000- such was the interest in those days in current affairs.

Re: Black Waterproof jackets - a bad idea?

Decathlon has a black very light waterproof jacket for about £35 but like many others I am reluctant to buy it as visibility must be poor compared with a brighter colour. Likewise much cycling kit is black. I prefer to be seen.

Re: Extinction Rebellion

It is easy to pour scorn on those who are prepared to sit down and be arrested. Yes we are all addicted to technology. I love my bicycles and I watch cycle races on my laptop but that does not stop me for wanting strong government action on climate change. We are all affected. I have exercise induce...

Re: Oh Eurostar we weep to see...

A disgrace. Awhile ago the EEC was trying to get all trains crossing national borders to provide full, and free, facilities for carrying bicycles. I have heard nothing since and with Farage and his mates likely to have voted against it in principle and Brexit still unresolved I guess the disgraceful ...

Re: Why there's so little discussion of cycling history?

Recommend you join the Veteran-Cycle Club. Full details online. Their two publications are highly recommended. News and Views newsletter covers current events while The Boneshaker journal covers the history of the cycle and cycling. These are outstanding publications.

Re: TV coverage of 2019 Giro d'Italia?

You can get the Giro for free through such sites as Steephill but it is a bit hit and miss so I decided to pay the Eurosport subscription to receive online ccoverage on my laptop. This year the cost is £40 for a full year running from the day you pay. This has paid off with easy site access to all t...

Re: Saddle Height - Which Indicator More Reliable

The old 1.09 per cent rule still has supporters. The two thirds inner leg length likewise. Always go for the smaller frame.

Most decent runners run at about 10 mph. Are they included in the 5 mph speed limit?

Re: Looking for data on cycling in Greater Manchester

A copy of my 1974 University of Sheffield MA dissertation 'Planning for the Urban Cyclist: a Study of Greater Manchester' should be still available in the Manchester City Library. Otherwise the University of Warwick cycling archive has a copy. You may find this of use, There was still a healthy amon...

MICK LATIMER

i have just read in the latest Arrivee the sad news of the death of Mick Latimer in far away Tasmania. Mick was the warden of Salisbury Youth Hostel in the days when youth hostels were still the places for cyclists to stay. We could not find a better warden - the most friendliest of men, Mick could ...

Re: "Car dependency" - a depressing report

Sadly most motorists do not see it that way. They love their cars, however much harm they do to themselves and the rest of us. Politicians of all parties take the short term view and protect the status quo. Even Caroline Lucas does not appear to ride a bike. The media does not help either. Even the ...

Re: Scrapped HS2 bike path "5 times better value"

I attended the meeting where the HS2 cycleway was introduced. Yes there was scepticism about HS2 but if we could get a decent national cycleway on the back of it it was worth going along with it. Of course even then it was realised that this was perhaps going to be an attempt to encourage support fo...
