Re: Great Ocean Road.....

I rode Adelaide to Melbourne ( as part of a much longer tour ) in late August 2001 and loved every minute of it. I would recommend coming out of Adelaide up the Old Mount Barker Rd ( has a bike track ) and then following the quiet roads through to Strathalbyn and then on to Langhorne Creek through the vineyards and cross the Murray at Wellington on the little ferry. I agree that the road along the Coorong can be a little dull at times, but I really enjoyed the quiet - weekdays in non-school holidays was nearly traffic free. I used a mixture of camping, hostels and pubs. I had a little rain coming down the Coorong, but had generally fine weather except for a deluge when crossing the Otway ranges from Port Campbell to Apollo Bay. My panniers ended up as two 20L water containers. I followed the road from Mt Gambier to Nelson, Port Fairy, Warrnumbool and on to the GOR. I would recommend crossing over to Sorrento on the ferry and coming up the Mornington peninsula rather than heading into Melbourne from the Geelong side, however there may be a bike path/route on that side of the Bay now which would make it an easier end to the journey. I have great memories of that trip - the independant hostel in Apollo Bay with the old record player and the collection of records which included such gems as the Soviet Red Army Band plays Marching Tunes, and the young kid staying there who didn't know how a record player worked. I also remember the other cyclists I met ( Katie from New Mexico and Mick from Batemans Bay - where are you now? ). All the best if you decide to give it a go.

CHARGE FILTER MID DRIVETRAIN

Hi, I have a Charge Filter Mid that came with the following drivetrain.
Sora 3400 STIs ( 2/3 x 9)
Sora 3400 Double F Mech
Sora 3400 GS R Mech ( 27T max sproket, 37T chain wrap)
Tiagra 12-27 cassette
Sora 3400 50-34 Chainset

I would like to change to a triple set up and I have a few components purchased for other projects that I think would work. This is what I would like to use.

Sora 3400 STIs ( 2/3 x 9)
Tiagra 4603 Triple F Mech
XT 761 SGS R Mech
Either Tiagra 12-27 cassette (or HG50 11-32)
Stronglight 46/34/24 Chainset

Does this seem to be a workable set-up on paper? Has anyone made a similar change on a Charge Filter? Advice gratefully received.

Shimano/SRAM 10spd Compatibility

I have read a number of posts/articles regarding what fits with what and am still not entirely sure.
This is what I have -10spd drivetrain with 48/34 Truvativ Elita, 105 5600 shifters, 105 5600 SS Rear Mech, Tiagra 4500 Front Mech, Shimano 12-25 Cassette.
I want lower gears and plan to change the cassette and rear mech.
This what I think I know - if I buy either a Tiagra 4601 GS or 105 5701 GS rear mech I can have a cassette up to 32T with the double chainset. So can I have any Shimano or SRAM 11-32 or 12-32 10spd cassette?
Or if I want anything bigger than 32T I need a 9spd Deore/LX/XT rear mech, not a 10spd? Once again, are there any 10spd cassettes that are not compatible?
If anyone can confirm/deny any of this it would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Great ocean road Australia??

Thought I would use my first ever post to throw my 2pence ( cents ) worth into the ring. I rode Adelaide to Melbourne ( as part of a much longer tour ) in August 2001 and loved every minute of it. I used a mixture of camping, backpackers ( YHA's ) and pubs.( I also remember the pub in Nelson ). I too would recommend crossing over to Sorrento on the ferry and coming up the Mornington peninsula rather than heading into Melbourne from the Geelong side, however there may be a bike path/route on that side of the Bay now which would make it an easier end to the journey. I have great memories of that trip - the independant hostel in Apollo Bay with the old record player and the collection of records which included such gems as the Soviet Red Army Band plays Marching Tunes, and the young kid staying there who didn't know how a record player worked. I also remember the other cyclists I met ( Katie from New Mexico and Mick from Batemans Bay - where are you now? ). I'm sure there are other " Greater " ocean roads in the world, but I thought it was a great route to cycle and would recommend it to anyone. All the best if you decide to give it a go.
