Windstopper undies

Gore Windstopper. Bought 20 years or more ago after an unusually cold ride. Never worn. Label says Medium, but my tape measure says 32" waist would be snug, i.e waistband just about fully extended.

rjb wrote: 13 Apr 2024, 8:44am If not then a standard quill stem may be needed which will have to be set very deep in the fork column to avoid stressing the fork column and premature failure. I know kingpin riders who did a similar mod suffered from this problem.
Raleigh 20 forks with quill-A head adaptor and sloping handlebar stem. The headset cup is of course threadless, but the hex nut and lock nut are original Raleigh threaded parts which allows the headset to be locked in position. Unthreaded black spacer below the hex nut.
Handlebar height here is 35" from the ground to the tops of the bars. I've been using this on and off for about 8 years.

Edit - I think the adaptor is by Genetic with 190-200 mm length, which gives 100-110mm inside the fork column in that photo.

Re: Campag BB spindle / bearing slippage

I'd say they are assembled from the right and the interference fit ring fitted last. So if it is not a tight fit, then the axle could shift. I'd say --- it is busted.

PT1029 wrote: 9 Apr 2024, 5:36pm Looking at the photo, the central black spacer should be a cyclinder. The LH (in the photo) end look squidged outwards (bigger diameter), as though the whole thing has been compressed to much when the cups were screwed in. The correct set up is in the squidge free instructions photo.
That is the way they are. The single bearing is a larger diameter than the two smaller ones. I guess the squidge free in the instructions is a generic drawing since I am pretty sure the Record BB is as you say, a straight cylinder.

Re: Campag BB spindle / bearing slippage

jackt wrote: 9 Apr 2024, 2:20pm Here's a photo - the arrow points to the gap between the circlip that sits in a groove on the spindle and the larger, single bearing. The two smaller bearings on the other side are secured with a washer that doesn't have a groove to sit in.

IMG_7794.jpg
The washer is not a washer as such, it is a cover for a retaining clip of some sort right after the two bearings. I do not know quite what it is, not a circlip since there is no slot in the ring. it is fixed firmly to the axle itself, so must be an interference fit. This photo is of a brand new Centaur 111 I just happen to have kicking about with the aluminium cover removed (see it underneath)..

Yes, both types.

Re: M2.5 bolt

Second thought - I have several M2.5x12 cap head screws which you could cut down. If you really want a slot head then I have 25mm long. I also have a solitary nut which could be fitted before cutting to clean up the thread afterwards.

PM an address and I will put some in the post.

Re: M2.5 bolt

A possibility - buy M2.5 x 5mm cap head from Westfield fasteners. Head has 4mm diameter. https://www.westfieldfasteners.co.uk/A2 ... _M2.5.html

basingstoke123 wrote: 11 Mar 2024, 7:15pm Do 'private roads' have public access? A 'user' will often not know the difference.
Not necessarily. I recall a case back in the 1970s where police stopped a clubrun from entering a private road. Riders pointed to the bridleway sign, but the police obviously did not understand the difference (bridleway access was won by the CTC in 1968/9) and turned the riders away. A complaint was made to the chief constable, and a suitable apology received.

Re: last second ebay bidding

If I want something, I wait until a minute to go before entering my bid and then wait until the last 5 seconds before committing it. This is not fool proof since I can be beaten by sniping software or by a previous bidders higher limit.

Re: West coast France tour April 2024 camping

It is well worth detouring inland in The Parc Natural Regional du Marais Poitevin where there is a huge network of tiny brooks and roads. Very attractive, a bit touristy in places (photo is one of those), and with many campsites. I have stayed at a couple of municipals. I have crossed the area a few times, always a bit inland and away from the coast, so no immediate comment about your route.

Re: touring gearing ?

The Massif is nothing like the high mountains. I toured there (saddlebag and barbag) three times with a bottom gear of 36 front 26 rear, mind you I was only 40 years old at the time - and that was a long time ago.

If it pleases you to change your gearing, then go for it. Only you can judge whether or not it is "needed". New bits can always be justified :D

Try searching the Tourist information office for the town of interest. They often show campsite opening periods - e.g Quimper which shows lots of commercial sites and the municipal in this link https://www.quimper-tourisme.bzh/campin ... municipal/

SOS Talisman. https://www.sostalisman.co.uk/ I have been wearing one for over 40 years, contains ID plus emergency contacts and much more if you like. Not only for cycling, but for walking to the shops and all the other occasions I would otherwise have nothing to identify me. Far cheaper than a smart phone and positively miniature by comparison.

Re: CUK Mebership Card

As an option, yes. As the only way to show membership, no.

Since I (and others) have no wish to invest in a "smart" communications device I am quite happy to produce my plastic life membership card when required on the vanishingly few occasions that might want it, such as attending local AGM.
