Re: Altus/Deore rear derailleur swap

For information - My 9 speed Deore RD copes with a 50/39/30 triple and 12-34 cassette.
Generally Shimano rear derailleurs in 8,9 and some 10 speed have the same "shift ratio" so are interchangeable.
Some 10 speed RD's are not compatible as the shift ratio has been changed on 10 speed MTB and also 10 speed 4700 (Tiagra.)

There do seem to be a lot of bad crashes this year in both mens and womens top flight races affected a lot of the top riders. And some of the injuries have been horrendous. Mark Cavendish recently suggested that the relative inexperience of a lot of the peloton, as he put it, a lack of respect, is possibly a contributory factor. Not sure what could be done to reduce the carnage, controversial thought here, ban disc brakes, you have to learn much more bike control when your stopping distance is longer!
Coincidently those were my very thoughts today. Lots of very young riders who don't have the experience and no one with authority to bring them to order.
Although having said that I think it was a bit unlucky today. As it seemed as if one rider slid-out and then carnage followed in trying to avoid him.
14 DNF's today. :(

Re: Tiagra ST-4703 Shifter Not Working

Perhaps this Youtube video may give you an idea.
I have managed to fix a couple of shifters but also failed on others.

Have a search on YouTube as there are various videos on shifters not working.
Might give you an idea.

Obviously this depends on practical issues. Is the road wide enough, no traffic, etc'.
Mine too. I find that a key advantage and refinement of this technique - on hills steep enough to want it - is to place the bike so one's on-road foot is up-slope, for that enables one to start in the saddle already!

Unfortunately this technique is of no use to someone whose hill-start problem is a fear of falling at low speed. For sharp turns up into a steep slope are also off their agenda - especially within a moment of starting!
Have to go back down and start again.

Thank you.
Some perusing to be done.
I'm considering a mix of components which will probably come to nothing but we'll see.

rareposter wrote: 18 Mar 2024, 9:57am It'll be fine.

It doesn't work the other way round though - you can't use a 10sp chain on 8sp chainset/cassette.
Thank you for the info'.
I was wondering if there would be an issue when changing gear on the chainset.

Cheers.

8 speed chain on 10 speed chainset ?

As above :-
Is there any problem running an 8 speed chain on a 10 speed double chainset. ?
I'm considering running an 8 speed system but using a 10 speed chainset.
Cheers.

Re: Vitus 979 frame, 51cm.

Thankyou. Where are the measurements from, to. Centre to top? Top tube?
I had a 54 and it was fractionally to large for me but have been on the lookout for a replacement.
I suspect a 51 will be a bit small.
Has the frame been re-furbished or is it original, and would you know the year ?
Cheers.
