Thank you.
Some perusing to be done.
I'm considering a mix of components which will probably come to nothing but we'll see.
Cheers

Re: 8 speed chain on 10 speed chainset ?
Thank you for the info'.rareposter wrote: ↑18 Mar 2024, 9:57am It'll be fine.
It doesn't work the other way round though - you can't use a 10sp chain on 8sp chainset/cassette.
I was wondering if there would be an issue when changing gear on the chainset.
Cheers.

8 speed chain on 10 speed chainset ?
As above :-
Is there any problem running an 8 speed chain on a 10 speed double chainset. ?
I'm considering running an 8 speed system but using a 10 speed chainset.
Cheers.

Re: Vitus 979 frame, 51cm.
Thankyou. Where are the measurements from, to. Centre to top? Top tube?
I had a 54 and it was fractionally to large for me but have been on the lookout for a replacement.
I suspect a 51 will be a bit small.
Has the frame been re-furbished or is it original, and would you know the year ?
Cheers.

Re: Hill Starts - E-assist not helping
I don't have E-assist. But my technique for steep hill starting is to start at 90 degrees to the hill. Point the bike across the road, one foot on a pedal, and this usually gives time for lifting the other foot while setting off.
Obviously this depends on practical issues. Is the road wide enough, no traffic, etc'.

Re: Deore five arm cranks, PCD?
Just measure from the centre of the crank to the centre of any hole - times 2 will give the PCD.
But as above, and on my LX, 94/58.
The 110/74 is generally road chainsets.

N77 from Perth to near Pitlochry then N7 to Inverness. Parts also coincide with "EV1".Brianjeff50 wrote: ↑29 Feb 2024, 8:49am I used the cycle route (is it N74, I can’t recall) from Perth to Inverness in 2022 and it was terrific - long stretches of freshly tarmac-ed cycle path parallel to the A9 with short excursions onto minor roads. A great route, quiet, safe and very scenic.
After Inverness I went ‘up the middle’ past Crask inn to Bettyhill and across. Fabulous.
Designated cycle routes can be checked out on "Cycle Travel" or "RidewithGPS".

In one of your photo's there is a locknut still in place. Have you removed this? Or is it on the axle?

Re: Are there any modern cranksets that aren't goppingly awful?
Not so modern but how about these :- Campag's version of external bearing chainset.(Ultra Torque). These are at least 2010 and I only replaced them because I have now gone to 11 speed.
Not as easy to change the bearings as Shimano. You need pullers and the bearing is not a standard size. (slightly narrower.)
Only on it's 2nd set of bearings in 20+ years and they are still fine. Admittingly was on my summer bike . Probably something similar in Shimano's older ranges as well.
One advantage with these older cranksets is they take standard easily replaceable rings.

Will an 11 speed chain work happily with a Spa chainset ?
Are there any other chainsets, such as Sram, that will give lower gears ?
