Re: Never mind the Summer bike - Winter miles, Summer Smiles

I've been walking and using the turbo trainer over the winter.
I had a 3 day weekend. First ride in ages yesterday was 26 miles. I did 28 miles today.

Hopefully I'll lose some weight and be a lot fitter by the summer.
Riding a mountain bike with touring tyres on it helps. Very windy weather here too.

Unbreakable Flask

I'd like an unbreakable stainless steel flask that will keep my tea hot.
My current one means the tea ends up lukewarm on day rides.
I do prime it by filling it with boiling water and shaking it.
What can people recommend?
It can go in a bag. I'm not bothered about putting it in a bottle cage.

Spares for Avid Juicy 3 disc brakes

Hello, does anyone know where I can buy some o rings for the fluid reservoir on the brake levers? I'm not after a complete service kit, just a couple of pairs of o rings.
We have two bikes fitted with these brakes. The seals have started to weep and I think it would be a good idea to bleed them.

I can find plenty of bleeding kits on the web. Does anyone know what type of brake fluid to use?

Thanks, CC.

Re: DIARY: 2005 Kona Smoke, by a B-road/cycle track cyclist

I am surprised no one has mentioned your rear rack.
It really isn't a good idea to attach it with cable ties.
It looks a rather flimsy affair too. Anything attached to it could end up in your rear wheel and cause a nasty accident.

If you want to carry stuff, get something more substantial and bolt it to the bike.

Re: What is this?

It looks purely ornamental to me. Perhaps it was designed to hold flowers.
Do you know who lives there? They might let you in for a closer look, especially if you arrive by bike.

Re: Found: a memory stick

I'm glad to say I look nothing like your description.
I do like trains though, having lived at both ends of the Somerset and Dorset line.
Now sadly dismantled.
Do cyclists and train enthusiasts fall into a certain type?

See Hear

Series 33, episode 4.
Watch this on BBC I player if you can. There's a brilliant piece about a deaf blind cycle mechanic.

Re: How do I tell if my Shimano freehub is 8 or 9 speed?

It may be possible to fit a wider cassette body on it if the current cassette won't fit.
Google Shimano tech docs then look up the part number for your hub.

Re: Ignored in a bike shop

[quote=Typically, people in shops work part time - one result being that the Monday morning discussion about what happened over the weekend has been replaced by frequent update sessions as different shifts start and finish. Staff are hired and fired for de-skilled jobs like checkout operating - the barcode decides everything. Staff training is minimised and sticking with checkout operators, the till reminds them which stupid remarks they should make "Thank you for waiting. Do you needhelp with your packing?.[/quote]

If only it was that easy! The tills where I work don't decide on discounts, special offers don't work and often the loyalty card number has to be keyed in by hand.
Barcodes don't do everything. Often they don't work properly anyway. I once scanned an item only to find that I was about to sell a piano.
I take the time to talk to customers and help them. In fact, we are trained to ask if help is needed.
It annoys me that I can look around a shop and no help is forthcoming.
It wasn't clear who worked there and who didn't.

Ignored in a bike shop

A bike shop local to me has moved to a larger premises.
It now appears to be a bicycle boutique with rather a lot of staff.
I went to have a look in there today out of curiosity.

I walked around the shop for about ten minutes. Not one member of staff acknowledged me.
I asked someone how much something was as it wasn't clear.
He asked a colleague who didn't know either so they let me have the items for a pound each.
I'm not sure I'd like to visit them in the future as they didn't exactly inspire me with confidence.
A great shame as I really would like to support a local business.

Re: Checkout security - supermarkets etc.

There is a large department store near me that hasn't got any security guards.
I know a girl who works there. People regularly steal large items by putting them in a trolley and wheeling them straight past the check outs.
Smaller items get put in babies buggies or straight into a bag or pocket.
The staff are expected to stop people but my friend refuses because there is a real risk of getting hurt.
She reports any suspicions to a manager and let's them deal with it.
