Re: Gravel Bike Pricing

I well remember going to bike show in the Excel centre in about 2008. Cyclocross bikes were everywhere. I asked one of the salespeople if there was really any demand or even interest? He replied, no, not at the moment but all the marketing depts were working on it and would create the demand. Well, it took a few years but he was right. Then came fat bikes, then gravel bikes, if we believe that we really “need the next big thing”, then someone is happy to sell it to us!
I’m not in the market for a gravel bike. I built my own gravel, rough stuff, tourer, do anything bike years ago.
As an aside though, given the state of our roads, anything robust with chunkier tyres has got to make sense these days!

Re: Pedal removal - spanner direction ( which side non-std ? )

This might have been mentioned. Whenever I change pedals, I keep an old spare set close to hand as a reference. Any doubt, just look at the relevant sided pedal to check thread direction.

Marcus T, many of us didn't even realise the meaning of the name until it was explained. But I guess if don't speak Italian, you wouldn't!

I’m going to look at a secondhand Kennedy bike later on, from Kennedy City Cycles. It looks like a sweet, svelte bike. Familiar to anybody?

Re: Il Pompino discontinued ! Why & how long ago ?

As an aside. It seems the big boys, Wiggle, Evans etc, have properly dropped singlespeed/fixed at long last. I suppose the storerooms must be full of gravel bikes.

Re: Il Pompino discontinued ! Why & how long ago ?

Good point about wheel weight Brucey. If I do it, it’ll only be a sunny day, occasional use bike anyway. And pick the route/miles with great care. Spinning along in East Anglia was a doddle. South Devon, not so much!

Re: Il Pompino

The Flyer is a fine looking bike to be sure. I wasn’t convinced about disc brakes until I had the Day One. I liked them, though in a crosswind, they caused a loud whistle.
Might consider another Day One, but really want a lighter weight singlespeed this time round. Did have a lovely Bob Jackson fixed wheel bike. But gave that to my son in Singapore.

Re: Il Pompino

I had Genesis Day One. Sold it last Sept. Silly mistake! It had two sets of wheels. The standard and 26” with a Nexus 3 hub. A lovely bike and comfy, but quite heavy.

Re: Il Pompino

Thanks all. Will now review my possible bike list. The Charge Plug and a couple from Evans are on it. A Surly Steamroller would be nice, but now at silly money IMO.

Tried to order one from Planet X and found out it’s all finished. Bugger!

Re: Chainring to sprocket ratio, Shimano Nexus 3 speed

Thanks mjr. Interesting, if a little long winded! Think I’ ll stick with 42/21. This is on a Genesis Day One. Dropping to a 26” wheel.

Re: Chainring to sprocket ratio, Shimano Nexus 3 speed

Brucey, thanks, got it. Though near enough to the SA ratios as to make little difference. As they used to say in the dockyard, close enough for government work.
But.... it’s the max sprocket size compared to the chainring that I really want to know.
I’ve got a couple of Nexus 7 hubs geared 38/23 and they are both fine. But this Nexus 3 is a new beast to me.

Chainring to sprocket ratio, Shimano Nexus 3 speed

Hi all, anybody know please if the Shimano 3 speed ratio is the same as the Sturmey Archer? I.e. if using a 42 tooth chainring, then max possible sprocket should be 21 tooth?
Also, is the gearing roughly an increase from DD of 33% and decrease of 26%. I don’t find the Shimano docs that easy to figure out. Thanks.
