Re: Garmin GPS - confusion re maps?
For cycle touring (not fitness training) I would recommend a Garmin eTrex Legend HCx, a Micro SD card, and City Navigator Europe NT maps on DVD - assuming UK/Europe is the destination. The eTrex Legend HCx has excellent battery life with Energizer Lithium batteries (potentially several days).
This is the same set-up that I use and its very easy to use and to set up. The only change I have made is to add the Scottish mountaineering Contour Maps overlay to the card as well.

Re: Tattoos, Pauches, Metal hangings and Cycling
Would you be happy if your male doctor/dentist/lawyer/teacher/nurse/minister of religion were obese, AND wore ear jewellery and sported tattoes?
What difference would it make to you if they were tattooed ? as you might be surprised by the people that are.
And just to top this off you have now mentioned obese people, and again what difference would it make if they were ?
Me I have been morbidly obese, I have had piercings tongue and nipples, tattoos yes quite a few including one 1/4 body and others. I guess I am not up to your standards but would you know these things about me by just meeting me ...... my guess is that you wouldn't.

I would say its a good idea and maybe you should look into it further, especially if these people can make a business out of cleaning green bins http://www.greencleen.co.uk/miltonkeynes

I'll see what happens after that.
Why would you want to do that ? In my opinion most people or new cyclists are too preoccupied with getting faster rather than just spending time in the saddle riding, you don't have to be fast straight away that will come in time. Then what happens is that they don't get fast quick enough so look for the next easiest step which if you read all the mags ...has to be by using all these sports gels, bars and drinks.
My advice would be to ride your bike and just enjoy it, have fun, go places, join a club and put the miles in, the speed will come with out you even noticing it.

Re: Weight loss via cycling
Thank you Aek, I would like to say it was really easy to do .... and it is at times, the worst part is the amount of time it takes to lose any significant amount of weight this is why, most people give up.
I would like to say that it is simple to lose weight and not as complicated as some people are making it out to be, people get so tied up in how many carbs, proteins and fats that they should be eating that they totally lose the fact that they just have to eat sensibly. Cut out sugar and use the eat well plate as a guide to the amounts of each food type you should be eating, and control your portion sizes and you should lose weight.

Re: Weight loss via cycling
Cycling can and will help you lose weight but only if you are controlling what you eat at the same time. Basically calories in verse calories out. In Nov 2008 I weighed in at 23 stone, by Jan 2010 I weighed 13 stone for a total loss of 10 stone, I did this by following the Weight Watchers plan to the letter and cycling, it does take a lot of commitment to stick to any weight loss plan especially over a longer period of time, but well worth it in the end.

!!!! Swindone Wheelers !!!
If you were one of the Swindon Wheelers that past me in Aldsworth and then joined the B4425 towards Cirencester today 03/05/2010 at around 11.15 am, did you lose something if you did I have it here PM/Email me.
If anyone knows of an email address for the Swindon Wheelers or any members from there let them know about this message please as the owner might be quite desperate to get his lost item back. Or if it was not theirs and you know someone who lost something important on that stretch of road this weekend pm/email me.

Re: Effect of Atkins Diet
Rather than diet try a healthy eating plan, this will contain everything you need to stay fit and healthy and do your training. I lost my weight 10 stone by following the Weight Watchers plan, yes people do find it odd to convert food to points but it works and if you follow the plan you will lose weight, this is my blog if you are interested
http://myweightloss-kev.blogspot.com/
Remember the problem with a diet is that it has a start and a finish, most follow this to the letter then put the weight back on when they have finished their diet. What you need to do is change the way you eat and feel about food, rather than some fad diet.

Re: Sportive/Audax events
If you are going to do and Audax, don't worry too much about the bike, ride what ever feels comfy for you. I ride a second/third hand Dawes Horizon so not a fast bike by any standards, but it suits me fine and I have never run out of time on any Audax yet.
I started with a couple of organised 100k events and I am now working my way up through the distances, this year I have done four 100k rides and six 200k events. The time limits are very good around 7 hours for the 100k and 14 hours for the 200k, the most confusing thing for me was changing over to km once you get your head around this you will see you have plenty of time. If you Join Audax you will get your insurance included for when you enter events, there are lots of events advertised on the site and they are pretty cheap to enter.
By the way once you start its very addictive

Re: Good cheap trailers?
If you are not bothered by having a flash looking trailer you can get one for free from freecycle, as for a child trailer. When you get it take off all the material and put a plywood base on it, if you have a welder cut in half length ways and make it any width you want. This is what I did and it works very well
