Re: Why not a campaign for 20mph speed limit in Scotland, like Wales?

Why 20 mph, why not 10 mph .... How many of the accidents that occur in 30 mph areas are caused by vehicles exceeding the speed limit ? So the accident rate will stay the same but the causial vehicles will just be breaking the speed limit by a greater margin ? What does the data say ... after all t...

Re: Cyclecraft

If you would use adequate infrastructure, you're not vehicularist. They're the ones who write letters of objection to cycleways without even looking at the plans - just because it's a cycleway. They're the ones who get picked up by Dutch police for riding on the dual carriageway outside Schipol ins...

Re: Cyclecraft

I now think one probably should distinguish between "vehicular cyclists" (fine, just a way of getting around) and "vehicularist cyclists" (bad, the sort of people who oppose all cycling-specific lanes and roads as a matter of principle). When I read Cyclecraft I was surprised to...

I made that point a little earlier in the thread. I fell foul of Poe's Law.

Re: ** The Brexit Thread ** - 'Brexit Means Brexit'

Really? AT BGS we used to say it was for kids too thick for Bourne Secondary Modern  In reality though no kids were too thick for there. Back then three little towns in a row Stamford looked down on Bourne and Bourne looked down on Spalding. I'd guess Spalding looked down on Wisbech. I'm actua...

Re: ** The Brexit Thread ** - 'Brexit Means Brexit'

Really? We used to say it was for kids too thick for Bourne Secondary Modern  Children often talk nonsense to put each other down. You should not take childhood prattle seriously. So you do claim that it occurred to you that I might not be serious, but discounted the possibility on the grounds...

Are you trying to tell me that the possibility of subtlety occurred to you, but you discounted it on the basis of your mistaken notion of SGS? It was an excellent school in those days.

Re: ** The Brexit Thread ** - 'Brexit Means Brexit'

One of the daftest anti remainer jibes I've read here. That aside I'd wager a majority of leavers drink lager not beer. My target was 'teers. I guess I missed. Isn't there a cautionary internet saying about that? Found it. Poe's law. Without a winking smiley or other blatant display of humour, it i...

Re: ** The Brexit Thread ** - 'Brexit Means Brexit'

Nah. They can hold their beer. Surely effete remainers drink wine, ale is for stalwart John Bull. I knew no harm of Bonaparte and plenty of the Squire, And for to fight the Frenchman I did not much desire; But I did bash their baggonets because they came arrayed To straighten out the crooked road a...

Re: Tory leader - place your bets

Brecquou adjoins Sark and the Brothers own and control a lot of stuff on Sark much to the disgust of many Islanders. Its about time all these slightly off mainland places and BOTs had their tax regulations nornalised. Its partly tax avoider pressure and the unwelcome prospect of the British taxpaye...

Re: Tory leader - place your bets

Johnson is being paid £275,000 p.a. by the Barclay brothers, who also promote his leadership campaign in the Daily Telegraph. They live on Brechou in the Channel Islands, no doubt because they like the scenery. When Johnson is P.M. he will make decisions about pursuing tax avoiders. There may be oth...

I think you're right PR one way or another is the only fair system of government in a modern democracy. +1 ..[/quote] We had a referendum on that question and PR lost. Does that mean it is settled for once and all? NO polled more than twice as many votes as YES. What pejorative nickname shall we gi...

Re: My wireless speedo stopped working

I supposed my finger to the circuit point interface made a diode which demodulated the signal. The capacitive effect of your finger - maybe a sort of tuned circuit - as well as the diode effect. Just a diode, would detect all the stronger signals, not just one. Many years ago, I put a diode across ...

Re: Cyclecraft

I agree that the battle to preserve our freedom to choose to use the road is crucially important. If we have to use any facility, however inadequate, there is even less incentive to provide good cycle paths.
