Re: Trekking handlebars advice pls.

If you decide to get a set of butterfly bars then don't get BBB's offering. I did and regretted it as they flex far too much. I got a Genetic Zygote butterfly bar which is much stiffer but haven't actually kept it on my bike as I regularly need to put my bike in the back of the car. Having a small c...

Re: YHA prices: steep increase in the pipeline!

I wouldn't be seen dead in a YHA. If you want to get a sleepless night sharing a huge room in bunk beds with 20 other fat drunken slobs, crashing around at all hours, rustling plastic bags at 5am in the morning, screaming screeching kids running amok and slamming doors then maybe it's the right pla...

Re: does anyone know of a good wheel builder south midlands area?

Would it not be possible for Rohloff to make a forged hub or would that not be possible or in doing so simply make the cost of the hub even greater than it already is? Setting up to make a forged component is extremely expensive, but maybe if Rohloff had known that the hub would be so successful an...

Both my hubs are black and kept very clean. I keep my bikes indoors so not bone chillingly cold either.

Re: German wants to reserve bikespace

The few times I have taken my full frame bike by train it has been a painless experience save for a few very rude other passengers but nothing as bad as risking your life on dangerous roads. I have bought tickets on line and at stations and just got on when the train arrives no problems. The only ti...

Re: Quiet site near Loch Ness

I thought the Camping and Caravan Club had a special rate for "backpackers" that also applied to touring cyclists? I'm sure I've used that on the site at Poolewe a couple of years ago. Thought it was good value and they had great facilities for washing clothes etc.(Though you may not need...

Re: Worn tyres on brand new bike

I use Merlin form time to time although only for components. Have never bought a complete assembled bike from them. Looking at your YT vid it looks like an ex-demo bike or pre-used. I like you would definitely not be happy especially if you ordered a BRAND NEW bike and were expecting one what ever t...

Re: does anyone know of a good wheel builder south midlands area?

It might be better to actually read what you are copying and pasting. The advice appears to apply to OLDER Speedhubs. Neither of my 2 Rohloff Speedhubs have been supplied with these rings and none have been fitted when the wheels have been built and the hubs are just fine. Do you actually own a Roh...

Re: does anyone know of a good wheel builder south midlands area?

Don't worry too much Ivor, these hubs have proved to be very reliable. There have been cases of flange failure, but must be pretty uncommon. My hub was brought 2nd hand in about 2001 and was manufactured either that year or the year before. When I replaced the rim about 3 years ago I fitted the fla...

Re: does anyone know of a good wheel builder south midlands area?

I checked my hubs and the recent one built by SJS has the rings on. Didn't even notice but then again I wasn't looking for them but still should have realised. The older hub was bought back in Dec 2016 but this doesn't have the rings on. There were no rings with the hub in the box when it was bought...

Re: does anyone know of a good wheel builder south midlands area?

….. as far as I know the hub shells are machined and so not as strong potentially as a forged hub. that is my understanding too. If you look at the specs for large diameter bar stock (which is what I think they make their hubshells out of) it is usually quite a bit less ductile than smaller diamete...

Re: Upgrading my Tent....looking at Hilleberg options.

My current tent is an MSR Hubba Hubba NX which has served me pretty well over the past 3 years. I’ve had to replace the fly at the start of my current tour as it seems to have stretched over time / use and it started to touch the inner when wet and drip inside when raining.....far from desirable. A...

Re: does anyone know of a good wheel builder south midlands area?

Brucey you have now got me worried I shall double check my hubs later. Looking at your picture of these rings around the flange, are Rohloff admitting to a design fault and this is their fix? Surely they should just make the flange taller so as not to need these rings or would this not address any w...

Re: Upgrading my Tent....looking at Hilleberg options.

I’ve met a ton of people on the road in the past 3 years / 40,000km plus journeys and the ones who are riding with Hille’s speak so highly of them.....I’m very seriously thinking of getting myself one :) So...the question is which one?? I’ve narrowed it down to 2.... The Anjan 2, or the Rogen. Both...

Re: does anyone know of a good wheel builder south midlands area?

shipping the Rohloff hub to them is not going to be that expensive. With UPS posting a Rohloff within the UK is around £10, insuring it for it's full value will be somewhere in the region of an additional £40 Account holders like SJS either use their preferential rates or accept the risk and post u...
