Half radial rear wheels: why rare

Half radial rear wheels (I read about them in SHeldon site), seem a good idea for strong rear wheel: so why are they rare?

Re: Camping gaz cycle lamps ever?

I use a dynamo now, but the first lamps I was given were Ever Ready Front/Rearguard and were rubbish, were replaced with Pifco, still rubbish, then Nightriders
(would have been a bit better other than rear lamps turn off at random feature), then a dynamo, with power split equally wrong and rear, hence wondered about non-primary cell extra lamp for no streetlights: I thought of this a long time ago.

Re: Camping gaz cycle lamps ever?

I meant the little 3cc piston engines, although a plain gas lamp would be quieter.

My (old) idea was that primary batteries use a lot of energy to make and give a feeble lamp, so why not cut out the middle man (battery company, battery),
and have a bright lamp directly from fossil source, probably useing less fuel overall!!

Its only a mad idea cos you didnt think of it!! :)

speedsixdave wrote:To actually be seen, get a Smart 1/2 watt Superflash battery light. You can get 'em off eBay for less than a tenner, they're small and very light, and they're super-bright. I don't believe there's a dynamo rear light that is anywhere near as bright.

.

Although the smart sounds useful as a FOG lamp, I dont think unlimited brightness at the rear is necessarily safer, you just want bright enough, perhaps flashing for attention: you dont want to dazzle people, (so as they carelessly dont see pedestrians), by ruining their night sight: like careless persons who sit at lights with foot on brake causing high level brake light to dazzle everyone behind. I think dazzling people with your rear lamp might be illegal in a vaque unspecified way.

I prefer an "everlasting" rear dynamo lamp (with standlight): saves batteries and avoids starting journey with a bright lamp, and ending it with a dim one. Battery lamps are extra. Perhaps a variant of reelights that could power a standard 0.6W dyno lamp would keep the cable haters happy

Brake toein q&A suggestion

In the current Cycle mag, I am unclear about thebrake squeal prevention diagram: is that filed out section as large as it looks? does it go right the way thu the block? Perhaps some photos would clarify everything.

The SA supposed to be the worst of five speeds: in 1st you pedal faster for same effort as in 2nd: therefore I hoped they would /could fix it and wondered what the cause was.

Sunrace SA are apparently redesigning it to give 250% range, so perhaps it will get more efficient.

But reducing peoples nightsight / dazzling them reduces their abiity to see others like pedestrians: if car lights are too bright then they should be capped. Bright and or flashing Flashing seems the way to be seen not dazzling.

IMHO only cyclists and motorcyclists should optiionally be allowed to use tail lamps: then vehicles would have to bee careful to avoid dents

Can a AW be fitted into a SA 5 sprinter shell?

I wondered if there was any method of fitting an SA (eg AW) 3 speed into the UK built SA 5 speed shell ?

Ensure the peak detachs easily, otherwise in a mild fall which should result in no injury, the peak will knock your head back (cos didnt come off) and you'll whack under your jaw on the road.

Giro helmet's pegs seem too secure: the oldfashioned velcro method seems safer.

Helmet manufacturers still seem to make no effect to reduce the ability of hellmet to snag and convert sliding movement to rotation: too many pointy bits

I have the sunrace 5 speed internals, which seemed to be all metal, so I suppose oiling should be OK, and if I was to replace it, I suppose I could look for an old 3 speed.

Rogerzilla, would the oil leak at at acceptable rate out if the hub was oiled via the indicator chain portal?

I presume your new 3 speed leaks so badly an oil port is pointless.

Thanks.

Bean counters are annoying:

saving 0.0000001 of pence on the oil port means they have now removed the SA labyrinth seal. Grrrrrrrrrr.
