calling sturmey hub gear experts

Hi, we have two old Bromptons: i) a 1997 - 3 speed SA-AW; and ii) a 2000 SA-5spd with SA-5 speed Sprinter gearing. Both are modified for touring with double chain-sets and modified front derailleurs to decrease the lower range of gears for hill climbing. Both sets of gearing work well and the SA-AW ...

aluminium alloy frame failure

Hi, any advice appreciated.....I suspect the frame is now useless (see uploaded images x2)? A ~20 year old Birdy Blue frame. Bike used less than once a year for short journeys - so few stress-fatigue cycles. Bike stored inside the home so little chance of any galvanic corrosion. I took the bike out ...

Re: SRAM / Sachs 3 x 7 Indicator Chain & Rod / Toggle Chain

Thanks again Brucey for your considered advice and for the technical diagram, which was most helpful. Here is an update: Dismantling the hub; the axle key was fractured through the middle, obviously explaining why the toggle chain would not tighten in the axle key. The hub has seen little use from n...

Re: SRAM / Sachs 3 x 7 Indicator Chain & Rod / Toggle Chain

thanks Brucey, I wonder whether your suggestion about dislodging the axle key is correct as I loosened off the R hand lock nut, trying to gain access to the locking smallest sprocket of the Shimano hyperglide sprocket of the 7 speed cassette. I noticed the problem when I tightened up the R hand lock...

SRAM / Sachs 3 x 7 Indicator Chain & Rod / Toggle Chain

Hi, I have a SRAM 3x7 hybrid hub gear that has not been in use for a decade. Today I took it out of storage and removed the indicator chain to run a little oil into the hub. When screwing the indicator chain back it, the toggle chain now keeps slipping and won't screw into the axle key. SJS cycles l...

Re: Sturmey FW problem!

Many thanks Brucey and Simon. Despite being sure that the timing was correct (the gear ring rotated smoothly), I took the hub apart again, and the timing was slightly out  . Set the timing correctly, and problem was solved. It is bizarre that such a subtle difference (in timing) makes such a d...

Sturmey FW problem!

Hi, for those Sturmey experts out there..... I have been combining the internals from an FG and an FW hub (both of which were incomplete) with the aim of ending up with a functional FW hub. The FW hub was missing both the planet pinions and pinion pins, and I want to use the longer axle assembly too...

Re: repairing sturmey indicator chain?

......further to robc02's suggestion, I emailed 'Oldbiketrader' and this was the reply 'You have two options, you send the indicator to me and I will fit a new chain cost £7, or you can purchase a toggle chain repair kit, HSS014 for £15 which contains, 3 new old stock SA Toggle chains, a pack of riv...

Re: repairing sturmey indicator chain?

thanks all for the helpful advice. It seems the best solution is to change the axle key and use an AW chain. However, I had a go at repairing the toggle chain too. The rivets used to link together an AW chain have quite a lot of metal hammered flat to create each link of the chain. By judiciously fi...

repairing sturmey indicator chain?

Hi, I have been looking for a Sturmey 3 speed AM indicator rod and chain for a 1950 model, and have two questions. a) I have found a potential replacement L sided indicator rod and R sided chain, but the rivetted R sided chain is broken. Has anybody repaired the rivetted chain, and if so, how? b) Wh...

Re: Eyesight Issues

Rest assured that treatment for diabetic retinopathy has improved markedly over the last 15 years. It is now rare for people with diabetes to become blind whereas sadly it was very common 30 years ago. Ophthalmologists now have treatments available for preserving central vision that did not exist a ...

Re: Eyesight Issues

Sorry to hear that your eyesight has suffered as a consequence of the laser photocoagulation. A bit of background first before addressing your question......with diabetic retinopathy treatment, it is vital to try and preserve central vision, because that is where the retinal cones are that we use to...

Re: Sturmey Archer plus Derailleur

Hi, I have just seen the thread and was prompted to write as I have almost 40 years experience of combining AW Sturmey hubs, derailleur gears, and double/triple chainsets and thought others might like to read about that experience. Firstly, for the person who wants one bike that does everything from...

headset locking washer and nut stuck!

...........help please! I have acquired a 531db 1980 Holdsworth Mistral with a 1inch threaded Tange head set that needs replacing. Having removed the handlebars and the top locking nut, there is a threaded spacer that is stuck fast. There doesn't seem to be serious corrosion, between spacer and stee...
