Re: Stems, bars and seatposts - how much?

During my recent bike build I was also taken aback at the price of these items. Luckily I found that Planetx were selling Holdsworth branded versions that suited my build for very sensible prices. Seat post £14.99 https://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/SPHOGS/holdsworth-gran-sport-seatpost Stem £9.99 https:/...

Re: Van Nicholas Yukon

I used to have a VN Yukon of similar vintage. The fork was branded VNT (Van Nicholas Technology I think) & as i remember had an alloy steerer, carbon blades and alloy dropouts.

Re: Drive side spokes breaking

Out of interest what method did you use to stress relieve and did you also set the spoke path at the nipples? I destressed as I was shown on my wheel building Couse, by grabbing and squeezing handfuls of spokes and by putting hub on the floor and pressing down on rim, rotating it around. Turn over ...

Re: Drive side spokes breaking

Thanks folks. Seems like I am doing the right things and hopefully not many more (hopefully zero) spokes are yet to break

Drive side spokes breaking

I am sure that this has been covered before, but please bear with me if I ask again. My wife has a newish bike that has maybe done 500-1000 miles. It has just suffered it's second rear drive side spoke breakage where both spokes suffered the heads breaking off. Hubs are Shimano FH-RS300, rims unbran...

Re: Bicycle Brinkmanship....?

If you want to see bicycles tested to destruction, try going to Africa. This Tanzanian bike is in comparatively good nick compared to many. Note however the lack of brakes and the downtube weld behind the headset. The rebar rack is a bonus.

Re: Well I never...the hipsters steed!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6HRCZoi6iRo You'd have thought they could have set up the indexing before they did the video! Yes, absolutely. One chainring = corner cutting. Personally I think it looks very pretty, but I agree about the single chainring is mean. I wouldn't want to go up serious hi...

Re: My wireless speedo stopped working

Hi Folks

Thanks for responding. I was just bemused as to why my speedo had stopped working & I guessed the radio masts were to blame- somehow. It sort of takes my faith in technology away from me a bit. If they can kill your speedo, what can they do to your GPS?

My wireless speedo stopped working

I don't know Cumbria and the north Lakes very well, but on a ride out today we passed the perimeter of an area with massive radio masts. I now know this is the Skelton Transmitting Station. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skelton_Transmitting_Station Just after we came up to it my wireless Cateye sp...

Re: Cleaning is SOOOOOOO confusing

Discussed a thousand times here. A. Remove and immerse in degreaser or solvent, repeat and rinse. B. Use the clip on devices with degreaser or solvent. C. Wipe the grit off exterior. D. Add lubricant without cleaning. I prefer A. One must not forget the recommended Sheldon Brown method :D https://w...

Re: Inherited bicycle

The Puch bikes I knew forty years ago tended not to be very good, I'm afraid. Heavy frames, steel wheels, low-grade parts. Built down to a price in an era when people wanted cheap bikes that, to an untutored eye, looked the part. No doubt there were better ones. I had a couple of Puch bikes in the ...

Re: First Aid Kit

It's a hard question. Limitations on space will probably mean that you don't pack the item you might need. I carry some plasters, including some quite large ones, antiseptic wipes and just in case a lint bandage. Most importantly IMHO is to carry a space blanket. If someone comes off their bike and ...

Re: New wheels: hubs, rims & tyres?

Thanks folks, these look like really sensible suggestions. I am sure I can find what I want here and not have to build the wheels myself. I note that Spa Cycles are offering a range of rim types, seemingly all at the same price. Colour and number of spokes I understand but if you can help me underst...

New wheels: hubs, rims & tyres?

Hi I mainly use touring bikes so MTBs are a bit out of area of expertise. All the same I own a nice old Specialized Hardrock which sees odd days out and is used on snowy days. Problem is, when I acquired it, it came with rather avant guarde Spinergy wheels which have Kevlar spokes and carbon fibre h...
