Or the lovely looking Paul cantilevers as used by Robin Mather on his own expedition tourer featured recently in C+ and on his web site http://www.robinmathercycles.co.uk . Paul recommend the neo-retro cantilver for the front (they say its a blatant rip-off of the famous Mafac Tandem brake but with ...

To update: I've replaced the Shimano chain with a SRAM PC68 and lo, silence reigns again. Interesting to note that the SRAM is coated with a light wax out of the bag, their web site says its GLEITMO™, I've just left that as it is and I'm sure it contributes to the sound deadening. For a true compari...

Hello, Might I suggest that you make sure you have the correct width chain? I know that an 8 speed will make a racket when used on a 9 speed system. The difference in width can be found using a micrometer, but it is very small. It doeas however make a great difference. John. The IG70 is an 8 speed ...

Purple extreme = extreme noise?

In the process of changing my drivetrain to isolate a mysterious creaking (now resolved with a new freewheel, see earlier post) I put on a new chain, Shimano IG70 with a new cassette, HG60 (11-34) and I thought I'd give Purple Extreme a go, having used Finish Line Dry for a while, which is ok but ne...

Pleased to report that I've replaced the freehub with a new one and taken the bike for a 25 mile shakedown today and, praise be, no more noise! Not a job I've done brfore but it wasn't too bad. Spent a little time puzzling how to remove the hollow bolt from the freehub once it was away from the whee...

Ridgeback have always made good quality well specced bikes, but they always seem to be overshadowed by the big boys somehow. Their Horizon is a touch more towards fast credit card touring/audax with its dual pivot brakes and carbon fork. A tad expensive now that they too have gone to an aluminium fr...

I've done over 7000 miles on my Horizon and have been more than pleased with it and it would fit your requirements perfectly. I use it for day trips, exercise runs, and have done two hosteling tours of Scotland on it and have never had a problem. With its sloping top tube I think it looks better tha...

Mysterious transmission creak - can't locate - need help!

I've got a transmission problem on my Dawes Horizon which is driving me to distraction; basically I'm getting what's best described as a short sharp snap or creak sound intermittently, usually, but not always, after freewheeling and as I start to pedal again, sometimes, but not always, accompanied b...
