Re: Selle SMP Plus - Touring use?

Well I tried and didn't like it, at all. But, I can highly recommend trybikestore - they sent me a new saddle for nothing more than an email, trusting me to send it back in 7-14 days if I didn't like it. If I did, I could have had 25% off rrp. Nice trusting way to do business. More saddle manufactur...

Re: Mercian Rapha film

Great film, love the bit about hiding the new frame from the wife, great series. In fact all the Rapha films are excellent, my favourite is the Rapha Continental: Assynt. It might be staged, I don't care, what films aren't.

Re: Catastrophic failure of aluminium frame

Just in case anyone thinks that Titanium is the best compromise let me add a note of caution. My Van Nicholas Amazon developed some cracks running along the length of the non drive side chain stay. At first I thought that they were scratches as they were in the form of swirls in a sort of lazy S sh...

Re: A modern triple ?

then I believe the 10 speed Deore's don't work with anything but specific chain and RD and certainly not with road shifters. ? I have an 10speed 11-36 SLX cassette, LX rear mech and dura-ace downtube shifters.... if you want wide speed on a road system then you use the 10speed mtb cassette, + 9 spe...

Re: A modern triple ?

Just to muddy the waters - neither the OP or anyone else has mentioned 8/9 or 10 speed. Does 'modern' mean 10 speed? If it does, then I believe the 10 speed Deore's don't work with anything but specific chain and RD and certainly not with road shifters. I have a 9 speed 'touring' set up on my VN Ama...

Re: quality starting tools

Definitely the a chain whip and cassette removal tool and then Cable cutters - Park Budget work stand - I have the one EBC do, but it's widely rebadged and you should be able to get it for about £50. Big adjustable (possibly for the cassette removal - I use a socket I already had) - the Park one is ...

Re: Out with the old or - Which Touring Bike now?

I have mudguards on my 58cm Amazon tourer and size 47 feet. My shoes don't touch the gurads - at the most extreme there is perhaps 12mm clearance. Not a lot, granted, but enough. I know VN tweak the geometry of their bikes from time to time, so it may not be the case now, and it may be worse on smal...

Sound advice all, thanks. The bars are actually 3TTT Randonneur, I think 26.0, will check before proceeding.

Re: Dawes Horizon quill stem

Ha, that makes sense! I remember it as black and unbranded and it would be the sort of thing the bean counters at Dawes would save pennies on. I'm happy to get a better quality one - there's a load at SJS to choose from - I guess it would be an 80 or 100mm extension?

Dawes Horizon quill stem

I'm dusting off the cobwebs from my 2003 Horizon and giving it a bit of a makeover - for reasons lost in time, I sold the original quill stem and replaced it with some sort of Ahead type convertor. This is as ugly as sin and I think I should go back to a pukka period piece quill - problem is I can't...

Re: Selle SMP Plus - Touring use?

What about something like the ISM Sport or Touring? I'm considering the Sport myself as I have yet to find any saddle that is comfortable beyond an hour or so.

Re: Selle Anatomica query

To add to my previous post, I note that when it was launched, the X was recommended for riders from 190-280 pounds. That quickly changed to 160-250 (or 280 for 'casual use'). Perhaps they experienced issues with stretching after launching.
