DaveP wrote:I'm impressed too - are the clips metal or plastic? Not that it should matter!
I've been thinking about trying something like that for a while, but have been too lazy to get around to it.

I'm a bit less impressed by the long mounting point offset resulting from getting round the calliper. Have you put this setup to the test yet?

The clips are plastic and very cheap (50p for four)

As the bike will only carry a day bag, so max weight should be no more than about 7kgs it doesn't worry me that much, I know what you mean though.
That said I've seen a lot worse rack fittings carrying full touring kit before now.

You should try Googling it and see what you get.
Seriously, I'd always wanted an Ultra and couldn't afford both so sold the Kona to get the Ultra. No other reason.

Thanks for clearing that up,I thought there something wrong with the Kona.

Well I'm still on 5 times tables with bar-cons. A 9 speed cassette and STIs is a bit modern for me and since two of the three chainrings are bigger than my outer I suspect I might feel overgeared as well.

Ah the confusion of having to much choice :? :)

Re: 80's frame design

There was an American system about that time called a "Softail" (Ithink) it was a sort of carbon fibre cantilevered boom that attached just behind the head tube with the saddle at the "free" cantilevered end, very similar to you're description.
The system was used on some tandems of the period but never caught on.

I was watching one on ebay a week or two ago. 2009 model, 1500 miles on the clock with a full set of IMO lower quality pannier bags thrown in. Went for £540+P&P. It was close enough to home for me to walk to the seller and ride it home.

I didn't bid as it wasn't worth that to me right now, I'm just considering a spare bike for when something serious goes wrong with the Jackson. The gearing on the Kona's a bit 21st Century for my taste.

£540 sounds a good deal for a straight little used machine, thanks for letting me know about that.

Why did you sell it?

Mudguard stay brackets

Thought I'd share this for anyone who has rear dropouts with only one pair of eyes either for rack or mudguards, you can double up with a longer bolt but as this bike has a disc brake the positioning of the stays can be tricky,so bought some electrical cable clips and fixed the stays to the rack supports. The clips are 12mm so were too big for the 10mm rack tubes,a bit of innertube around the tube first and, hey presto! neat very secure, rubber mounted mudguard eyes.

If it's one of these then you simply bend the chain sideways and pop off the 'plate' from the pins.

Yes it is one of those, and what you say makes perfect sense.Sometimes someone who knows saves a lot of head scratching :?
Thanks :)

Thanks for that Brian,at least Halfords are useful for something :)

Taya chain connector

Has any one had any experience of these? On the new Cannondale tandem whilst lubing the chain I noticed that its a Shimano chain :( with a Taya connector, after looking on Taya's website I'm none the wiser as to how to get the thing apart.
If its not a reusable one fair enough I'll replace it with a Sram one.
If anyone knows I'd be grateful.
Thanks

I always thought canti levers pulled the same as calipers,ie STI's work the same with cantis as they do with dual pivots/single pivots.
