As suggested above, aren't many (all?) of them getting paid a set amount for each loaded trip? Thus encouraging a general haste in their journeys. I think this was discussed a few years ago with regards to a spate of cement mixer incidents.

Re: Female Cyclist Death In North London

For the record, my left hook close call experiences over the past decades (luckily none resulting in going down... but some very close calls)...
have been due to vehicles rapidly overtaking me at the last moment. It made no difference what position I had on the road. They seemingly `had' to get round me no matter what!

Re: Strange car drivers

There was a Citroen Saxo behind me, all pimped out and a young chap driving it by the looks of him. After patiently waiting a good distance behind me unti it was safe to pass, he gave me at least a 5 foot gap as he overtook me slowly and carefully. Weird I know. Approaching a crossroads further along, he moved his car towards the center markings allowing me to pass on the inside with plenty of room to spare. I gave him a quick thankfull nod of the head and he responded with a friendly beep beep honk of his horn as he again gave me more than enough room as he overtook again...after waiting patiently behind me until it was safe to do so.
He couldn't have been more than 25 ish and the car was pimped to death and in that garish purple/blue changing colour type paint.
Never in a million years did I think I would ever experience that. It made my day :)

Interesting choices. I like this one... just wonder if its `too' police-y for the police...

Always go down steps backwards after a marathon! Seriously.

Wow that taxi was almost supernaturally deranged. As if the truck driver in Spielberg's Duel (1971) survived and had acquired The Knowledge.

Re: Oxford commuting

re: Headington Hill, just take care on the descent. Also, at the bottom at the second set of lights, if you are going straight ahead (i.e. heading towards Magdalen Bridge/city centre), then be very aware of traffic turning left to Morrell Ave. If you are in the bike lane traffic may overtake and turn left straight into you. My missus had her elbow fractured there avoiding the car (no contact) and driver drove away.
Best to ignore the bike lane when approaching and crossing that intersection and take primary position in the centre of the lane.
