My Trek 1000 was called a winter training bike ( bought so that I did not use my best bike in the bad weather). I bought the triple and it has clearance and threads front /rear for mudguards with 25c tyres, it also has the threads on the stays for a rear rack. It has a carbon seat post so I think the general advice is not to use a rack that clamps to the seat post if it can be avoided. It also has carbon forks so the same for front racks.
The realy interesting thing is the hand book gives a frame and rigid fork warranty for "The lifetime of the original owner".

Junior school children love small animals in school. With this in mind it would be interesting to see "Miss" being followed around by her new brood.
I did say get their dinner as in diet and the healthy eating ethos.
I work in a senior school but have the pleasure of going out to junior schools. In 5 years I have taught over 2000 junior children who know me as the Leggo man, some even remember my name.
I think it great that your pupils will get to see the chicks grow.
I do have this picture in my mind of you being followed to school then around the classrooms by the chicks. They could make school assemblies realy fun.

Eilethyia
Are you still of work, also with the winds as they are does it make it any better not being able to ride or have you riden any more since the 6th.
I could have been sent to Selly Oak hospital but the GP said it was better to wait and go to the Woodlands Orthopedic Hospital specialist knee clinic. The delay let the swelling went down.
Urocyon thank you for explaining some of the things that are happening it is reassuring to know it is not unusual forthis type of injury.
I remember looking at my leg sticking out from the knee at a stupid angle laughting about the situation, I did not laugh when the consultant repeated it but was surprised.
Next the physoterrorists, the idea is to avoid an operation if at all possible The doctors will decide but recon it can be avoided. There is not much instability in the knee now exept for on the trainer. If wearing shorts so I can look at it and the right pedal at the top of the stroke. If I pust down with the right leg I can see the shin move outwards below the knee with little pain. It is strange to watch but I do avoid by pulling up with the left leg.
Left thigh and calf are now bigger than the right by 1" and look odd.

In the early seventies I had a 5 speed drop handlebar bike badged Raleigh BSA that had 26 1/4" tyres. The next one up in the range had 27" wheels 10 speed. A person I worked with had a straight handlebar sturmey 3 speed with 26 3/8".
26 1/4" was bigger than the 26" mountain bike as I tried on in the BSA and had to drop the rear brake down by about 2"

Many thanks to both of you. This does seem to have gone on a long time, at least work are being very helpfull and understanding.
My problem seems nothing compared to your collar bone Eilethyia since early December must seem a long time go.
The bit I am not looking forward to is the foot is turned out with the thigh facing forward so my shoe catches on the crank arm even with toe straps tight. This has got to be straightened in the knee. The up side the knee does not wobble from side to side also backwards and forwards. It was a bit like trying to stand on a ball.
Today was the first day I did not use the walking stick :D

It was cycling.
Out on the bike on a lane it was icy so I stoped rather than fall of.
Both feet on the ground then did a Bambi impresion with both lower legs going out sideways. There was no pain at the time and I had a laugh and rode home. Three days later could not stand on right leg with the knee wobling sideways.
Friday is another visit to the Orthopedic hospital. The consultant who was moving my leg about taking my breath away informed me about two more months and the next visit is going to hurt. The idea is to try and avoid an operation.

Great Day

On Saturday 12th Jan I damaged the ligaments in my right knee.
Today I did 10 miles in just under 1 hour on the trainer with both feet in the pedals with no pain :D and walked up the stairs normaly (not down yet).
After I did it I taught myself to ride on the trainer using only my left leg only as I was not able to put any presure the right one (had to use a walking stick) :( .
Hospital appointment on Friday so maybe I will be allowed out to play on the bike. :?:. The doctor is trying to avoid an operation.
The sun has been out today and that has been frustrating riding on a trainer.

You do seem to be getting better as you now only mention the brakes on the bike :D .
You do not ruin your chaps ride as he wants to do this with you, I assume he does ride on his own. My wife used to say she ruined my rides. She did not but gave me something else to think about and we were out together. Now she does not say any such thing but uses me to fetch and carry also work out the route. We now ride together at the same speed.
I have ridden miles on cannel towpaths and still think about falling in but never have. I would love to see a Pirate Ship when out so that is some thing to look out for.
If you put which area you live in we might give you ideas of places to try.

Being 5ft3" with 29" inside leg I know how hard it can be to get things to fit, especially bikes with shops not wanting to stock something for us proper height people :D . I do not know where you live but you could try to find somewhere that hires bikes (idealy near a popular bike trail). These popular areas tend to have a better range to choise from. If you can get one the best to try is what the hire place will probably call a Hybrid or Comfort bike , try to avoid a Mountain Bike.
This will let you try different bikes with the shifters that you use thumb and fingers for not twist grips. It will not take you long to get used to them and the trails used by hire companys are usualy reasonable.
Ask how often they replace the bikes as this will give an idea of how they view the customer (some replace every year others realy do maintain them well some not so good). I am not surgesting you buy an ex hire bike but try as many as you can to get an idea of range and size.
A lot of people buy what they think they need, only to replace as they ride more and confidence increases as it certainly will. After all this time and you are riding that much you realy are doing very well. You will find it gets a lot easier with practice not even thinking about changing gear.

In North Wales I would if you are near Bala you could try going over the Berwin range to a small village called Llangynog (there is a hotel here but do not know the name). Pistol Ryader waterfall is worth a look as is the area around Llyn Vrynwy. There are to Chirk Ruabon Wrexham this avoids the A5.
There is always Llangollen with the Horseshoe pass near and a steam train running to Corwen
