Re: When did LOOK 'red' cleats first appear?
I recall having some Look PP96 pedals which had the red cleat... I would hazard a guess late 80's maybe 88 / 89 ? but I could be wrong.

Re: Surly Cross Check, All City Macho Man or ?
I had a Cross Check a few years back ( only sold it as I wanted discs for winter commutes...) built up with fixed wheel. Comfortable & versatile frame and not overly stiff, nice & compliant - I used 32mm Panaracer Pasela tyres, a nice supple 35mm tyre would provide even more comfort.

or directly wired?
The old version with the plug is known to have problems with electronic stuff, if moisture gets into the plug socket.
Did it stop flashing? The batteries just have 100mAh
No, it was a new version of the light purchased in November... it will be replaced under warranty I was informed today from the importers Amba Marketing. The light continued flashing for a good 12 hours after my 10 mile commute home !

Re: B&M Luxos malfunction
I commute in all weathers & have certainly got a few soakings over the last week. However there appears to be no sign of any water ingress into the light - I run full mudguards too & have extended the front guard with a flap 'out front' to reduce spray back towards the headlamp.

It's a very good light & was still flashing this morning a good 12 hours after arriving home from the daily commute ! ( at least the light didn't go out on the commute ! ) I have emailed Amba marketting the importers & am awaiting their response...

B&M Luxos malfunction
I'm a bit baffled by this one, but my B&M Luxos U headlamp will not turn off from a steady flashing mode - despite unplugging all the cables - it appears to be running solely on the Cache battery but despite pressing the on/off switch it continues to flash... it may take hours for the cache battery to drain. Anyone else had this problem? I suspect I'll need too return it under warranty...

Re: Ryde Grizzly vs Sputnik rims
Cheers for the info Colin, think might give the CSS rims another go once the current std alloy ones wear out...

I found wet weather braking using KoolStop carbide pads wasn't as good as I like it, so I went back to KoolStop salmon, after the rims smoothed out a bit. Wet braking is now good, and pad wear is acceptable. ...and, as mentioned, no black slime!
Interesting comment. I'd previously given up on my CSS rims ( after many 1000's km I must add ) after the braking surface totally lost it's (very) wet weather braking performance with the recommended 'blue' Swissstop pads... How old /or should I say 'used' are your CSS rims Colin? Maybe I should have tried the Salmon pads before replacing my rims with the standard alloy Grizzly?

Any law re: safety release on front mudguards?
Does a bicycle sold with traditional mudguards by law have any form of safety/breakaway release such as the SKS secu clips fitted? If an accident did occur where the mudguard jammed would the retailer be liable??

It may also be worth checking whether your chainrings have 'ramps' to aid the front mech shift the chain. Thorn tandems often had non-ramped rings - particularly when fitted with bar end shifters.

Re: Rear rack advice & Carradice Bagman problem
M-part ( Supplier: Madison ) & Salsa ( Supplier: Ison-Distribution ) both manufacture seat collars with integrated threaded pannier eyelets - either of these could replace the existing collar on your Dawes. Just be sure to get the correct diameter.
