Re: Sturmey Archer 5 star hub gear thumb shifter

Hi

Thanks for everyone's help. The pictures shows the shifter and internal assembly and the parts list (this came with the bike about 30 years ago - I keep these things!). I tried sticking the small knob back on but it just came off again. The left hand slider should be a mirror image of the right hand slider. I think that there must have been a compression spring in there, as otherwise I don't see what held the middle piece against the rotary switch - will have to look if it sprung out when I took it apart!

would the dual lever HSJ776 be a special Sturmey Archer part or just a normal dual lever assembly?

Really appreciate the help with this.

thanks Gordon Young

Re: Sturmey Archer 5 star hub gear thumb shifter

Thanks very much for that. I gave the bike to a friend a few years ago and she only really uses it to go to village and visit her daughter. It is a ladies Dawes Diaploma and has a very comfortable riding position, quite light and easy gears with the hub gear. I didn't want to have to buy a new hub just because I couldn't get a shifter. Now I have two solutions - two gear levers (which might be confusing for her ) or one shifter and effectively get a 3 speed bike. I have stuck the small bit that had broken off back on but doubt that it will hold. I was wondering if I could get a new piece from a 3D printer. It is quite a simple piece. It is a very simple way the shifter works but not really robust.

Re: Which App

I use Viewranger on the mobile phone (free to use) and then use the Opencycle map for the area I intend to tour to across Europe and also Ontario. Hs worked very well.

Re: German Cycling Maps with Roads Coloured by Traffic Density

are you thinking of the 1:150 000 ADFC Radtourenkarte maps? They are published by BVA, Bielefelder, Verlagsanstalt, Niederwall 53, Bielefeld 1.

Sturmey Archer 5 star hub gear thumb shifter

a small part has broken off the above - HSJ829 is the gear shifter part number. I did buy a new gear shifter for the bike about 20 years ago and the only place on the web I have found is oldbiketrader.co.uk but the site says when you go to buy that , they are ill at the moment. Anyone know where else I could try? The bike is still very good and very useful for local journeys as it is very easy for a beginner to shift gears and very low maintenance.

Re: Any recommendations of Companies that organise Cycle holidays in Denmark

Hi

Eurobike , an Austrian company, has cycling holidays in Denmark. WE have used them for the last 4 years (Brenner Pass to Verona, Villach to Trieste and others) and they are brilliant. Everything was perfect and they are cheaper than the equivalent UK companies.

Turned mine upside down and cut the ends off. Work well then!

Re: Long Distance Cycle Routes

There are a lot of European riders with the different tour companies that transport the luggage each day. THis year we cycled 310k from the Brenner path to Verona and each night there were plenty of other bike tourists at the hotels with the different companies that offer carrying of luggage each day. We have used Eurobike for the last few years and they offer an excellent service. I saw at least 3 Italian companies as well. I have used Eurobike for the round trip around Lake Constance (Bodensee) , the Main Radweg, the Weser river, etc. What I have noticed is the increasing amount of electric bikes that are used for these tours mainly used by what look like retired people.

Re: European family tours?

The River Main which is easy to get on from Frankfurt airport and the airport is very bike friendly. The route is along the river and all on a tarmac dedicated cycle track away from any roads so no road noise either. Flat all the way with nice views of the river and some pretty towns and villages along the way. THere is also a railway which you take with the bikes or use to return to Frankfurt on.

Re: What's the Best GPS Unit for Cycle Touring?

I use the Viewranger app on my mobile phone and downloaded the (free) Opencycle map which I have used on all my european tours. I also have the OS maps for the UK and Ireland which I had to pay for. Since I have the phone with me anyway I have found this to be the best solution.

Re: Spring Tour - Ireland

You won't be able to take train from Wexford to Waterford anymore as it has stopped running. I think the one from Waterford to Limerick Junction is still running and then you could get a train to Cork. I quite like the cycling between Wexford and Waterford as it is good bird watching country especially if you take a trip to the Saltee Islands. But certainly the SW is great cycling touring country. You can take the ferry across the Shannon and miss out Limerick if you like (but living just outside Limerick I like it!) and cross to go through the Burren. The Shannon has 100 dolphins in it which you might see from the Ferry but a trip out from Carrigaholt on the Dolphin boat is something you shouldn't miss. Let me know if you need more info as we have lived in Limerick for 30 years and do a lot of cycling.

Re: Altmuhl cycle path

Andalucía in October was perfect for temperature. Between 20 and 26 C and sunny most of the time (rained when we were in Ronda). We stayed in Montecorto with Andalucía Cycling Experience using the Leisure Ride holiday.

Altmuhl cycle path

HI

Had two great cycle tours this year - Lake Constance in Sep and then Andalucía in October and looking now for next year. The Altmuhl looks interesting from Rothenberg to Regensburg - Germany is such good value. Anyone cycled it?

Thanks Gordon
