Re: Straight or Drop Bars
I use the old fashion trick - turn the drops upside down and cut the upper loop off. Great for touring!

Re: holiday recommendations for Germany
I found Frankfurt airport brilliant for the bikes. We had to change terminals and no problem with the bikes on the airport bus. We had booked a 'classy' hotel (the Hilton) and just wheeled the bikes straight in through the marble floor reception - not a blink of an eyelid! next day I had a puncture re-inflating the tyres ( i have problems with those mini pumps causing the valve to move about while pumping and then breaking!) and no end of guys in business suits offering to help. Germany is great for cycling.

Mecklenburg Lakes Cycle Route
Hi
Has anyone cycled the above route? I have been reading up on it and it sounds great for next summer but I was wondering how good the path is. There is talk of cobbles and I was wondering if there is much of this. Thanks

Re: Cycling the Portuguese coastline
Hi
We cycled the Algrave from the Spanish border to the most SW point in Europe in September of this year. We flew into Faro and picked up bikes from Lisa Bikes and the caught the train to the Spanish border and started the cycle. Lisa Bikes had arranged the route as they advise not always riding the official route as it travels alongside a busy road in parts. Parts of the ride were very good but didn't really enjoy the golf course bit. Very little traffic on the whole journey, very good bird watching and very nice last 3 days out towards and beyond Sagres. Signage is not that great and the paths are not up to the standard of Germany or the Loire a velo. Still very enjoyable with good food and wine and good accommodation. Not many people seem to cycle the route.

Re: holiday recommendations for Germany
We flew to Frankfurt Airport with out bikes, cycled the Main cycle path to Bamberg and then caught the train back to the airport staying in 2 star accommodation which we booked in advance. Absolutely no problems and a fantastic tarmac cycle path. Over 300 k, all away from traffic. They even have vending machines in the street with inner tubes in them. A really good holiday. Can let you have details of the accommodation if you need it and access to photos on Flickr.

Re: Loire Valley
Hi
We cycled from Orleans to Tours this year during August and last year from Tours to Angers. We both thought it fantastic. Great to be on cycle paths away from traffic looking out over the river with the great wildlife. Great food and wine, good gardens to visit and nice old towns. We used the local tourist office in Tours to arrange bikes and accomodation and transport of luggage. Worked out really well. €38 per day per person for hotel and breakfast, hire of bikes and transport of luggage which I thought was exceptional value. Flights from Stansted to Tours for €20 return including taxis was also exceptional. A really 5 star holiday. My photos are on Flickr and have web addresses of the cycle hire etc if you want it.
regards Gorodn Young
