Shimano tapered BB
Going to replace the square tapered BB. just whats the difference between all the UN models? I assume higher price equals better quality but are there weight savings etc. Should I consider other makes? I have a Campag Veloce one doing nothing but I suspect that my Stronglight chainset needs a JIS taper

It will kill you. Give it to me. Seriously they do fetch really silly money. Something knackered makes half new price. Do some research before you sell

Re: Triple mech issues.
haven't got a clue. 09 maybe. What puzzles me is that with a non indexed, non triple c/s, non deep drop mech all is fine. Must be in my set up.

Re: quick release on rear track ends
Never caused me a problem. As other people said, just use decent QR's .
I maybe Cycle cat is unaware of traditional dropouts as opposed to verticals.

Triple mech issues.
I built up a frame with a Stronglight triple chainset and Campag Veloce ergos. i know that some of those are not the greatest when it comes to trimmimg the exact gear and this may be the probelm but I am wondering If I am missing something. It works fine with my early eighties Suntour double mech although the trim facility of my older Record ergos is nicer. When I fitted a new Campg Racing T triple mech things go wrong. It just isn't in the right place no matter where I set it. You would think that a nice wide deeep mech would be more tolerant wouldn't you? Would the BB be an issue. I am running a wide but double BB. I could go narrower with the frame/CS combo or I could try a triple BB. Any experienced base suggestions.

Re: Heretical thoughts about drop handlebars
Every so often I get the urge to ditch the drops but never for long. Now I have frame that fits my needs for a higher front end many problems have gone. What hasn't is access to the brakes. On the tops its fine but less than efficient compared to being on the drops.
on the drops I can reach the damn things. They all curve out too far. To allow them to move in yet not foul the bars I suppose but they are just to far away. Haven't solved that one yet as short of making bars with a recess for the levers i can't see an answer. Got to be drops though as flats don't provide the drop and also the hands are in the wrong position.

Mudguard help
Can anyone suggest decnt mudguards that do not have fixed mounting points for the stays?
The disc caliper on my Cotic X gets in the way and prevents the upper most stay from going as vertically as most guards seem to need. What i need are guards that allow me to fix the point where the stay attaches after I have mounted the stay to the fork.
I could re drill the rivet but that leaves a hole and is second best.

Re: Compact drop bars
I used a pair to shorten the reach to the shifters.
They just bring the bend plus the shifter back loser to the steering column. A shorter stem will also do that. The drop from top to bottom will also be less so that your hands will be higher on the drops.
If you want them to cut down the reach for the brakes, ie your fingers are too short, they are no differnt to any other bar. Some bends with some shifters allow less of a stretch and thats all.
You could get your hands in the same positions by using a shorter or more angled stem. Cheaper too.

How to get from Ullapool
Planning a trip to the Outer Hebrides. Same as everyone else. Oban and a ferry then north up the islands and back to Ullapool. Anyone tried this with bikes with minimal mainland riding. The obvious idea is to leave a car at Oban and then somehow use public transport back but trains are either non existant or extremely tortuous. Buses? Doubt it. What did anyone do, who has done this trip?

I agree. Its a sign that you have got it wrong. In fact all noise on a bike does the same thing.
Thats why I won't ride Hope hubs . Which is rather silly as they would do the job nicely.
