The new bike needs some mudguards. Whats good. I am running 2 sets of wheels. 1 with 25mm tyres and the other with 42 mm knobblies. I could just use a set of guards for the 42's or I could have a set for each if they come of easily. I can't stand rattles or 2 tone jobs. Other than that open to ideas.
Oh year something that will take a bit of abuse and keeps the bike clean.

Re: 10 speed Shimergo
Just for the hell of it, last night I set up my 10 speed Ergos with an elderly Super Record rear mech on a new 10 speed shimano Cassette. New chain as well. The mech doesn't like shifting into 3rd, 2nd or 1st on the big ring but thats not a smart way of doing things anyway. Equally it ran noisily in 8th, 9th and 10th on the inner ring. Again why even try this combo in normal use.
I managed to get it silent on both Chain rings in the middle of the cassette and went from there.
The shift was maybe a touch heavier than with a modern campag mech.
I am also happily running a record front mech on another bike with 8 speed Ergos and a 28 to 50 tooth triple. That has a worn chain and cassette and shifts even better.
Cheers for the ideas. That Highpath link is handy

Re: Lubricants. Are we being taken for a ride?
Years ago I ran a small off road motorcycle which would take any of the O rig chains that help long life. My solution. 2 chains. Take the dirty one off, wash it in a bit of heating oil which leaves a greasy but clean film. The chuck it in a tub of all the odds and ends of oils left over. ( The drainings of bottles etc) EP90, fork oil, anything. Soak for a day or two then hang over the tub to drip for a week. Wipe the surplus off. and fit. Keep 1 on and 1 off and its great. I now run a SS Cx bike in the woods and this method really helps chains run smooth and also last.

Re: 10 speed Shimergo
As other bits haven't turned up I am waiting for am Ambrosio cassette. Lack of patience may get the better of me in which case I'll try it with Shimano spaced one and see. Having done 7, 8 and 9 speed hybrids, ie Campag shifter and Shimano cassettes I am hopeful.
I have even managed 6 speed shoe horned into a 120mm spaced alloy SS frame. Contrary to general wisdom and gllomy predictions I find that a touch of wear in the chain helps wonderfully. Lets see.
If my other post about Caampag shifters turns out ok.

Re: Any Campag experts here?
The bit that holds the cable( where the nipple stops)is plastic as is the thumb lever and thus the spur that pushed the internal ratchet away allowing a return of the cable.
maybe I am wrong on the year. I assumed 2009 but maybe not.
Anyway Mick was right here I think. Haven't tried in on the bike but with a bit of inner clamped in the vice it works. Fingers crossed.
The Ergos that shift any time, any place are early 8 speed Records. Wonderful kit. Its only vanity that making me move to 10 speed really.

Re: Any Campag experts here?
Well my other ones work perfectly off the bike. I have had both pairs side by side to compare. However its sounds such a good idea that I'll try it . Ta

Re: Any Campag experts here?
Sort of sussed it.
The othe end of the button pushes the ratchet thingy away, allowing the gear to return. As its not pushing far enough it looks like wear on the surface. By showing a scrap of palstic in I faked less wear andit works. blasted part is tiny and plastic but is the one thing listed as a block part number. Rats

Any Campag experts here?
My 10 speed Veloce Ergos are playing up. I can shift down a gear( big lever) no probs but I can't go up a gear. pressing the thumb button doesn't work. The button won't move. Sound familiar?? Inside you can see that the button , well the other end of it is supposed to push a steel cam/hook away from a toothed "gear" . In effect a ratchet type thing. The hook is not being pushed quite far enough.
Is it possible that the plastic bit is worn andthus not high enough. ?
Any other suggestions. I assume the bits I need are availible but await the experst view.

Re: 10 speed Shimergo
As I said , Ambrosio might well be the way but the cassette I need isn't availible anywhere. ie a 25 big sprocket. Anything else is silly pricey. Might end up staying 8 speed anyway as my 10 speed Ergos don't shift at all to the higher gears. Dunno why yet.Ideas?

Re: New bike build. Your opinions please.
A nice new Cotic X.
Actually the cable thing is not definte. crossing the cables gives a slightly lighter change but a slightly stiffer fork movement when pushing the bike. I quite like it as it makes pushing the bike from the saddle easier.
More than happy with the choice but all these options now appear! No dilema really , just prettiness. Syle.
To avoid cutting the steerer until I have ridden it I have 11cm of spacers in!! Suspect it will be half that but this way I can fine tune things. Good fun really. The first time I have really been able to be so picky since my last brand new road bike in 1983.

Re: New bike build. Your opinions please.
Just thought of something else. Putting a 10 speed cassette on to a nominal 9 speed hub. Do I need any spacers etc?

New bike build. Your opinions please.
Building my shiny new frame up and just wondering:
a) Obviously cables need nice smooth curves so how do you route gear cables from Ergos/STI's Keep the brake cable the same side of the stem as it starts or cross in front of the headtube and down the opposite side of the down tube. . Most bike have the former yet a smoother run come from the opposite and they look tidier. I have never found run an issue and if this puts the cacbles in the wrong place further along, cross them under the down tube. They don't rub there either and anyway you replace them before they do. Well?
b) How many headset/stem spacers is acceptable both practically and aesthetically. More spacers means a flatter stem . Happy with the strength/flex issues but the looks!!
