Is this normal? I thought it would run down to the smallest cog (snip)

Doesn't solve your problem, but look here and read on 'low normal'. Presumably this feature now extends to the LX rear derailleur:

Re: choosing STI shifters

I have Sora STI levers - the poor relation of Tiagra. They work fine with my Altura Orkney handlebar bag:

The brake cables just loop under and around the bar bag. If I was buying new STI levers I'd go for Tiagra.

Cheers, fietslogies and wallyone. It's not seeming quite so daunting now. Thank you both very much.

Re: What do you do with panniers..

How about those combination locks you get for laptop computers? I have one and I've seen someone else use theirs to lock their bike. I'd use it for the luggage only, though. Pull it tight. Here's a link to one:

I think the alarm goes off if the circuit is broken. It certainly goes off if someone tries to make off with your luggage.

Specialized to Topeak to Ortlieb. Have you no brand loyalty, man?

Me and my Altura buddies, Orkney and Arran. I left the Skye panniers at home to travel light for a (half) day ride last weekend. And I only just had enough room for my kit :?

A bloke I was out cycling with a few weeks ago recommended the 8 panel shorts that Halford do. £12 - £13 I think.

Re: why I need so many bicycles?

1985 Coventry Eagle Touristique (requires TLC - and rust remover/shot blasting)
1986 Raleigh Road Ace (requires handlebar tape - and a delicate touch to stop the brake hoods from crumbling away)

(er, then a bit of a gap)

2009 Ridgeback MX5
2010 Kinesis Racelight T2 (with non-Ridgeback components donated from a 2010 Ridgeback Horizon)

If my Touristique is restored it will be my main tourer.
The Road Ace is for (flat) rides in nice weather.
The MX5 is my commuter and trail bike.
The T2 is for everything else.

Some words and picture on my Raleigh Road Ace:

But surely I can justify one more. Ridgeback Panorama or Trek Pilot 2.1? Okay, maybe next year...

Re: Medical Recovery Question

Mark, I think you're a brave fellow and I'm disappointed that I couldn't make that ride after hoping to do it. Just out of interest: do you have a plan B if, say, you're at the Humber Bridge around 3 o'clock in the morning and things, er, start to unravel?

Thanks for the information, folks. Just trying to see if we can cover the distance and visit notable places in the time we have available. Cheers, appreciate the effort.

Hull to Rotterdam to Zeebrugge to Hull: help/advice, please!

My wife and I were hoping to take a leisurely cycle tour from Rotterdam to Zeebrugge (or the other way around) this summer. We wanted to take the ferry from Hull, cycle between Rotterdam and Zeebrugge then return to Hull. Has anyone done this, please? I’m afraid I’ve been making hard work of planning it online.

We have five or six days to spend cycling and sightseeing. My wife isn’t keen on hills - my preference for the Yorkshire Dales was firmly pushed to one side - but she can comfortably manage 30 - 40 miles or so a day. Does anyone have a ready-made tour I could lift, please?

Any other advice on such a tour/accommodation would be gratefully received – it’s a bit out of my comfort zone. Oh, camping is not allowed. Many thanks.

Re: opinion on this c2c route

Any C2C that includes the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and the Yorkshire Moors is always going to get my vote.

I’m not au fait with the road to the west of Sedburgh, but I do like your route from there to Leyburn. However, to the east of Leyburn the A684 gets a bit busy for my liking (at Easter I even went through Preston Under Scar and down Whipperdale Bank to avoid the main road from Wensley to Leyburn – although with hindsight that could have been a bit too cautious after all).

I rode the A684 from Leyburn to the turn off to Harmby and I found it hard going with a lot of traffic up until that point (I was very relieved to get off the main road).

However, If you would consider going in a north-easterly direction from Redmire, later going along the B6108 for a few miles before taking the quiet roads to Richmond, then there is a less stressful route you could take to Stokesley. It’s a bit circuitous from Richmond - and there’s an easier way to Moulton if you wanted to go that way at all - but if you could find the time for the extra distance I think you would enjoy it. Here’s my Richmond to Whitby bit:

http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-ki ... 1886319460

Last October I more or less did your route from Stokesley to Whitby (actually to Lythe just to the north of Whitby) in the opposite direction - or at least I tried to, but the satnav took me through Westerdale: http://cycleseven.org/westerdale-sat-nav-hills - and it was very pleasant. (Apart from Westerdale, thank you.) But I avoided as much of the A171 as I could. I would advise you to miss out that stretch, too, if possible. (I took the A174 and that wasn’t so bad. If, for instance, you went as far north as Lythe you drop like a stone in to Whitby from there.)

So, basically, I think there are - for my taste - a few too many A roads on the route as it stands. If you’re okay with that then go for it. But if you want to spend perhaps a bit more time on a long summer day enjoying quiet, pleasant roads then maybe you could look at taking an alternative route.

Re: What's the point of narrow range 'road' cassettes

+ 1 for comments made by reohn2, as well as others. I think there's a case to be made for customising rear cassettes in combination with triple chainsets. I'm happy with my modifications, which I don't think are a compromise. Some words and pictures here:

(My custom cassette is 13/15/17/19/21/23/26/30/34)
