This is my underseat pack. Sometimes I take a rack bag in which case I plonk the underseat pack in the rack bag and pad extra clothes, grub etc around it.
Contents:
2 spare tubes
Tyre levers
Multitool with chain breaker*
KMC quick links
Loose Allen key bits (where is my 5mm?) and driver
Replacement rear mech hanger
Rear brake cable
Rear gear cable
Cafe lock
Electrical adhesive tape
*I checked on a discarded chain that the chain breaker on my multitool actually works. I use the Shimano pin so the KMC quick links really are for roadside emergencies only.

All the bits
Completed bike.
It took me a full day but there is nothing too difficult when you have the right tools. It isn't looking much different but feels so much better and 3lb lighter to boot. The first proper ride tomorrow.

Re: Latest Garmin Edge Models
Halfords are offering 20% off this - rather extended - bank holiday weekend until Wednesday, presumably taking it up to payday for many.
£207.99 in store for the Garmin Edge 530 - without the angst of wondering if Evri will leave it in the street or somewhere.
Cheers again for the advice.

Re: … if there might be interest in a Cube belt drive M/L Alfine geared ‘pub bike’
Thank you for your comments. It hadn’t occurred to me that the bottom gear might not be low enough. This is a pub bike that was used in pan flat Hull, so a problem like that was sidestepped.

Giant Connect Gel Handlebar Tape or Specialized Phat bar tape - but this last one is now pricier than when I got mine.

Enquiries welcome from anyone interested in this bike. Not sure of its worth - or how much the current owner would hope to get - so haven’t put it in the For Sale section. Needs TLC. Medium/Large from memory. East Yorkshire.

Re: Issues with 10 speed HG-X and "quick links" ?
I’ve read that. And yet I’ve also seen Shimano stating that the HG-X chain is suitable for 10-speed Road triples, specifically 4703.tim-b wrote: ↑17 May 2023, 6:12am Shimano does say, "HG-X chain is not compatible with other road 10-speed systems" unless you're using other MTB components, of course
When you push the pin out you'll have noticed a narrow metal "washer" on the end of your chain tool. That pin is now waiting to fall out because you've removed the peened end that was holding it securely, hence lockable quick links or the special Shimano pin
Some related discussion here mixed up with other stuff:

Re the OP’s situation, I would be tempted to ditch the compromised HG-X chain and fit a non-directional chain such as a regular HG.

Re: Issues with 10 speed HG-X and "quick links" ?
I'm not convinced that this is a good idea with a modern chain, zenitb.zenitb wrote: ↑16 May 2023, 8:28pm I converted my tandem to a 10 speed Shimano LX setup at the rear (but retained 24-36-46 SPA/SJSC rings/chainset at the front)...
Now as you may know, the HG-X chain is asymmetric, and my emerging theory on this is that my generic quick links different side profile makes them the first to jump off the cassette in any marginal chain angle scenario.
Either way I have put a new cassette and chain on now and have eschewed the Shimano "hardened pin". I simply sp[l]it and joined the chain in the traditional way by drifting one of the chain pins almost all the way out to split and then back in again to rejoin. Everything has been sweetness and light ever since with slick changes at the rear...

Re: Through Hull and back
My attention has been drawn to an updated "interactive map for cyclists" on the Transpennine Trail web site that takes advantage of the fairly new "Except Cyclists" one-way streets in Hull city centre to take riders over the River Hull at the Scale Lane bridge and on to the ferries.
Here's the link (note that I have selected the toggle 'Cycling' to display the layer that we are interested in. Even from the the official link, labelled "View interactive map for cyclists" on the TPT web site, the layer defaults to 'Walking')...
https://maps.transpenninetrail.org.uk/m ... yers=32879
Note that the Cycling route displays as a yellow line and the Walking route is purple.
So in summary, cyclists riding along the TPT must leave the bank of the Humber shortly after passing underneath the Humber Bridge and don't return to the bank of the Humber until rounding Sammy's Point - site of The Deep - at the southernmost point of the River Hull (on its eastern side) where it meets the Humber Estuary.

Not sure if the OP has already seen this, but another interesting read, here on Facebook. It is a shared interest group - and open - so you don't need to be logged in to FB to view comments made by others.

Re: The way of the roses - Aldwark Bridge closed
Hmm. I posted then deleted a reference to a footbridge that can be crossed by bike a short distance to the north of the toll bridge. After pressing 'Submit' I re-read your first post and saw that you had mentioned it.
So then I did a bit of digging and a three-year-old post refers to the toll bridge closure at that time. I reckon it does look doable, even if you have to push your bike for a bit:

Re: The way of the roses - Aldwark Bridge closed
It was a few years ago, but they were quiet enough for me. I had done a one-way trial run from Masham (or thereabouts), which is why I passed through Brafferton/Helperby. I'm wary of busier roads, which is why I stayed with the route through and beyond Easingwold.
Off the top of my head I can't remember where I picked up the WotR route again on our earlier unofficial ride, but we certainly passed through Driffield. Happy to answer any further questions if I can dig out the (pre Garmin) route...

Re: The way of the roses - Aldwark Bridge closed
Before I did the WotR a few years ago I did another coast to coast from Morecambe to the North Sea at East Yorkshire. I went through Boroughbridge then Brafferton/Helperby and so on, but we passed through Easingwold, so continued further north than York.

Re: Recent experiences of youth hostelling
I don't know how representative my recent stays at youth hostels are. I've only stayed at North York Moors hostels in the last few years. We book the entire dorm (six beds) even if there is only five of us. Not necessarily great value, but for a group within walking distance of pubs it's just what we've got used to. Decent English breakfast on offer, but I tend to use the self catering option and just have toast and tea/coffee in a morning. If I was staying on my own I'm not sure I'd stay at a YHA place.
