But I'm reserving the rights just in case😁
Ah I'd probably go nicer tyres and carbon fork then, should make quite a difference to how it feels.

Re: Wee Sprocket

Personally, I would only use the 11T sprocket whilst on the largest chainring, but if the chain is skipping whilst on ‘every’ chain ring is it possible that until recently you have rarely if ever used the 11T sprocket? Mine sees very little service.

If your chain has worn over use during the past twelve months along with all the larger sprockets, and then you drop the chain on to the smallest sprocket, you should expect it to skip; this is why you can get way with pairing a new chain with a slightly worn cassette, but shouldn’t put a new cassette on your bike and leave a part worn chain in place. Just a thought.

Thanks for that. I’ve had a look at their other videos. I like the authenticity. The simple style of presentation - jump cuts aside - is a welcome change from what we’ve been seeing from the like of GCN et al. More relevant to me, too.

Re: Looking for thoughts, ideas and or inspiration!?

Get a nice wheelset: 32h Mavic Open Pro C rims and Shimano 105 R7000 hubs, for instance. Put a pair of Continental GP5000 tyres on and plan somewhere nice to take your bike while you’re waiting for them to arrive. You will need rim tape.

You’re welcome. Enjoy.

Keep the other wheels for winter. Nice bike.

Re: Recommend me a multi tool

If I were to lose my multi tool I wouldn’t bother to replace it.

1) I have the Shimano chain tool at home for inserting the pins, but on the bike I carry a small chain splitter/de-riveter and spare quick links.

2) I have a couple of loose spoke keys covering the wheelsets I use.

3) Presumably this is something to do with different models, otherwise I’m not sure why you would need to remove that cover. I’ve replaced the gear cables on four different Shimano brifters and haven’t removed the covers in the process. However, I have replaced my bashed up Ultegra 6700 cover plates and I used a JIS-compatible Vessel Megadora 9000 +1 screwdriver (derailleur limit screws are +2) which was a satisfyingly snug fit.

You can buy Vessel screwdrivers and bit sets, although the price has risen since I got mine.

Re: 170mm & 172.5mm cranks on Audaxy bikes

Just an update that I shuffled around cranksets and put the 172.5mm cranks on another bike for the highly technical reason that they match the shiny brake calipers on that bike. I can honestly say that I can find no observable difference when switching between bikes. Thanks again for all the input, gang.

Re: crank length

I'm 5' 8" with a 29 1/2" inside leg. Most of my bikes have 170mm crank arms. I picked up a second hand bike a couple of years ago with 172.5mm cranks. I was a bit cautious about using them, but I couldn't tell the difference when I rode the bike. When I got another bike more recently I swapped the cranks on to the older bike and put a 170mm set on the newer bike. I can honestly say I notice no difference when switching between bikes. Here's that thread, by the way...

... but this was probably the most direct feedback I received :D
nsew wrote: 29 May 2021, 10:01am I suggest picking up a ruler and observing what 2.5mm actually is. Follow this up with few breathing exercises - 4 seconds in through the nose and 6 seconds out through the mouth. Then adjust your saddle height to where you’re comfortable and go for a ride.

You could try, but the voucher specifically excludes tech.
I didn’t know that. Thanks.

There's a 540 out now so you'll probably be able to pick the 530 up at a decent discount.
Thank you. And subsequent comments on this thread - that the 530 is a non-touch screen version of the 1000 with a beefier battery capacity - makes me tempted to try to swing the 530 from Halfords and chance a CTC discount request :)

Re: What is the reason for a low top tube?

Aside from the stiffness of the frame and the compliance (is that the word they use?) of a long seat post I recall reading somewhere about sidestepping the possibility of litigious riders complaining of crash landing their undercarriage on the horizontal crossbar.

Also, I like my bikes to have a good length of seat post sticking out so that I can clamp the three of my Longboards bikes round the seat post when using that type of workstand; I use a ‘Euro-style’ workstand (rests on the bottom bracket and dropouts) for working on and cleaning my road bike and some others with no or shorter mudguards.

Re: MTB front mech with Ultegra lever

joeegg wrote: 31 Mar 2023, 8:14pm My Ultegra triple front mech has come to the end after 12 years. Will a Shimano mtb triple front mech work with the Ultegra lever ? There's loads of mtb ones on ebay but few road ones with the correct clamp size.
What clamp size do you need?

6703 front derailleurs are, if memory serves, optimised for 52/39/30 chainsets. A Shimano 105 5703 front mech is looking for a 50/39/30 chainset, but I would wager that a 5703 front derailleur would work better than an MTB one on a 52/39/30 chainset.

Or are you perhaps asking this question because you plan to install an MTB chainset?

Not sure about the shark thing but it’s a no from me, too. I was offered their double ended brake cables for free to do a job for a friend but politely turned them down.

Just not worth it IMHO for the sake of a few quid.

Malton in North Yorkshire. No mountain passes etc, but close to the North York Moors and hills there. Closer still are the Yorkshire Wolds and lots of route options on mostly quiet roads such as those listed here:
