Re: Viscount bicycles!!

I saw that you guys got walloped with a huge storm and power outages. Brought back bad memories of "Superstorm Sandy" at the one year anniversary. Be safe everyone

Re: Viscount bicycles!!

Draper wrote:Finally managed to locate a left crank for my Indy 500, (see page 123) at Halfords of all places. This summer's few rides on the old bike have got me hooked again and I decided I would manage with the Indy for a few more months and then get myself a hybrid as I really feel too old for a fast road bike these days. And as most of my rides have been on cycle paths and off road the old Indy really isn't great with loose surfaces and potholes. I hoped a 'sporty' hybrid would be a more secure and relaxing experience to pootle about a few quiet country lanes and tracks (and not require the purchase of too much lycra at my age).

So I had a look round Halfords at a couple of mid-priced bikes, £600 - £1000 range, was impressed with the Boardman ones but couldn't believe the weight! My 33 year old Indy weighs in at a shade over 7.2 kilos, even some of the road bikes in Halfords weigh more than that and the hybrids weigh nearly twice as much! For example the Boardman Performance Race bike hybrid weighs 14kg and the Boardman Road Comp 2014 bike (£700) weighs in at nearly 10kg! What's going on?? I suppose the extra weight of the hybrids is to be expected, but I cannot fathom why a 33 year old bike (which was not particularly expensive) should weigh quite a bit less than a modern good quality road bike. And I always thought the Indy was heavy!

Can anybody enlighten me please? Before I go and spend my hard earned cash! I haven't really ridden a decent modern bike so I'm just hoping that despite the extra weight I will enjoy riding it just as much as my old Indy. I always thought that the lighter the bike, the easier the ride. Does the fact that modern bikes have a million gears really make up for that?

Draper, save your hard earned cash and get a set of upright handlebars, the corresponding brake levers installed instead of your drop handlebars and 27 x 1/14 tires are all you need to convert your road bike into a pseudo hybrid. I did that last year with my blue Gran Touring and it was great on the carriage trails in Bar Harbor Maine on my summer vacation. The Viscount frames are very adaptable. In addition, I've got a single speed conversion and my racing bike setup and I get good usage out of all of them for their intended purposes. As far as the number of gears go, its really more important to have a wide range of gears than many gears for your purpose of trail riding. Good luck!

Re: Viscount bicycles!!

I'm happy to report that the Viscount was right in the mix for my age group bike split placing 5th out of 14 and 6th overall in my age group. My split of 36:17 was only 36 seconds slower than last year on my Trek carbon fiber rig under more trying conditions this year. Overall place on the bike was 124/286 and 138/286 overall with a time of 1:23:47. Not bad for a 37 year old bike (and a 59 year old body!). I am more convinced then ever that these bikes were ahead of their time. 8) 8) Can't wait to try it again next season.

Re: Viscount bicycles!!

Done! The Viscount represented itself very well on a slippery, wet course with plenty of turns and hills. Official times are not posted yet but it was maybe only one minute or so slower than last year on my "modern" bike. All in all it was a blast racing the Pro. Preliminary results had me at 6/12 age group and inside the top half overall. The swim became an agonizing walk on rocks due to low tide and poor planning so I lost time there and expect my bike split to be reasonably good. I must say it was fun passing the aerobar crowd on occasion! Pics and splits to follow. Thanks again Whippet for being the Viscount racing "pioneer" :D :D

Re: Viscount bicycles!!

Thanks for the encouraging words Whippet and Cusqueno. Aging up next year is always fun since you get to compete against "older" guys. Just disconcerting how much "thinning of the herd" occurs after your 50's! I hope I inspire you guys and the other regulars to enter a triathlon next season. The sprints always have lots of first timers of all ages and abilities so if you can swim a little (much easier in a wetsuit!), jog a few miles, and tear it up on your Viscount, you'll have a great time and probably get addicted :D .

The Viscount will go sans aerobars and clipless pedals. I've been racing the last 5 years without aerobars since my balance isn't what it used to be and I've been very happy with toe clips and platform pedals since day one. I've come to the conclusion that only the top end guys get a real benefit from the aero position so I'm fine as is. Cusqueno, I don't think I could adapt to bar end shifters. I missed that whole period and learning "new" things is a b.

The bike is shifting smoothly into the all important 42/28 gear. I hope to have one of those days when the bike just disappears under me and the hamstrings stay quiet. Race report to follow. :) :)

Re: Viscount bicycles!!

It's time to do it. I'm going to race the Pro this Sunday at my last sprint triathlon of the season (and my last in the 55-59 age group arrgghh!  ). Thank you Whippet for setting the precedent with your TT race! Very inspiring. It's a .5mile swim, 9.8 mile bike and 3.3 mile run. I've done it twice and it will be interesting to compare times. The bike course is rather hilly with lots of turns so it will test my newly rediscovered down tube shifting ability to the max. To top it off, rain is expected (arrgghh!). I'm definitely psyched to give it a go and try to pass the young guys (actually anybody) on tri bikes. I want to do my best to give the Viscount a good showing and end the season on a high note 8) 8)

Re: Viscount bicycles!!

Whippet wrote:Well, that went as well as can be expected....

Didn't come last, in fact there was a whole 2 people slower than me. Strong headwind out meant my heart rate quickly climbed to the wrong side of 180 and pretty much stayed there for the whole race except the last few miles where I squeezed a few more bpm's out of it. Time was 30:51, I knew I was going to be relatively slow. My winter training will be a bit more time trial based and I'm hopeful of getting under 28:00 next year. This will put me amongst some reasonable clubmen with proper TT bikes which I hope will prove a point about the sheer wonderfulness of Viscounts. As for the bike itself, after the initial shock of effort had worn off it felt superb - efficient and very comfortable. Got a few minor positional tweeks to do and the friction bit of the gear levers don't seem to be doing the job as well as they could, but nothing major. Also, Busaste has hatched an evil plan that will give me a few more seconds, I'm sure he'll post pictures when it's sorted in a few months.

Nice to know that Viscounts are still racing! :D There were some good riders there. The bloke who won is current UK Masters track pursuit champion and got bronze in the European masters pursuit championship a few weeks ago.

Here's the result, I'm Kevin Hurley

http://www.newburyrc.co.uk/prod/php/get ... =getresult

And here's a graph of me inducing heart failure:

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/3776 ... I.facebook

Should be a few pictures soon.

Nice work :D . 19.4 mph with a headwind is no joke. I'm still only training on my Viscounts since my ego/competitiveness doesn't allow me to give up any time on the triathlons. I wish I could prove myself wrong and go as fast on 4130 chromoly as carbon fiber. One day.... :? :?

Either that or someone has had the keys to the time machine again.
WARNING! -DO NOT go over to Ebay.com if you have a spare couple of hundred £'s and want a GP. You could get in to something...
Even so, the exchange rate is ok at the moment and it could probably be haggled down...?

The condundrum one faces with that bike is "Would you ride it?" and make it not new? On the flip side how could you not ride it and live with it being just a very well preserved bike but not a new one. A nice headache to have I guess

Draper wrote:Thanks, what I don't understand is how the pedal sheared off in the first place, it wasn't seized up or anything and I had oiled the bearings a few weeks before. The bike wasn't kept lying on its side so no pressure on the pedal either. Must have been metal fatigue I suppose, although I expect the combination of steel threads on the pedal and the softer metal of the alloy crank arm is going to lead to disaster eventually?

Your LBS might be able to "clean up" or cut a new thread. It may be worth the look before you abandon ship.

Anyone else think that this could be a steal if the price stays at £60. I presume the vintage campag stuff will have good resale value.

Looks like a great deal to me. It's nice to to tool around on a single speed if you live in a flattish area. I'm making good use of mine :D
Hope you get it!

Sooper8 wrote:RE: the Deore -It wasn't riden much at all and was stored very well. It's like it just came out of the time machine.
When I said in the above post that it was pretty much original condition, I actually should have said that apart from the lack of toe straps and addition of the mirror, it is exactly as it was when it left the shop

Bendo, there's a story about the bottle....

I knew it was cracked/split all the way round at the bottom and unusable/unfixable, when I bought it with the bike.
I left it in for that first ride and to take photos'.

I was trying to take it out last night to use as a 'prop' to photograph my other bikes with it.

To cut a long story short, it was stuck in the holder and I gave it a little too much force and it basically exploded into dozens of bits- sharp pointy fragments everywhere. :(

But, part of the fun for me is hunting down parts and looking for stuff.

I took it out twice yesterday and just about to get her out of the shed now for an hour or so's ride.

Now having multiple Viscounts to ride makes me prone to just get on and go more than ever so I can relate! I feel like I'm in a transition phase as I approach 60 (gasp!) between triathlon training on my carbon fiber racing bike and just enjoying the comfort of a more moderate pace on a Viscount. Back in the 80's I loved to keep up as long as possible with the fancy racing guys on my Gran Touring V and yesterday I had that deja vu moment drafting off a guy with a Specialized carbon on my Pro.It's like coming  full circle
Definitely like going on a scavenger hunt for Viscounts. Don't know where Busaste found the bearing tools. Amazing find. I popped on a red and white GP in my size on EBay yesterday for a very reasonable price for all original. No. I will not desecrate this one into a single speed  The listing details were limited and I found it with hours to go so hopefully this will end up well  Now I'll be watching impatiently waiting for the tracking # to pop

I 've never seen anything but the aerospace frames stateside but it looks real sharp. When you get that ride where the bike fits like a dream, you'll be hankering to get out on it as much as possible!
Enjoy the great find :D :D :D
