Re: etrex 20/30 or 20/30 x - how robust?
I agree with Vantage that the Etrex 20 is pretty bombproof and mine has survived some major crash landings at speed. But the real danger it faces is being smashed to pieces by me with a sledgehammer for being so bloody difficult to use...

Great advice everyone, thanks a lot for that. My fellow riders will no doubt benefit hugely!

Rear mudflap
What's the best thing/way to fit a narrow flap on the rear guard to extend it? (The idea being to reduce the spatter on people behind)

Re: The bonk - when you least expect it
It's interesting because I do eat plenty at breakfast and lunch. It only happens if I eat say a slice of very sweet cake or eg a Mars bar as well. In other words if I avoid that kind of snack around midday all is fine.
Just find it interesting that it happens. G

Re: Lycra and Underpants?
What happened to all those people in the olden days who used to cycle everywhere in their sensible clothes? Or indeed people in poor countries who rely on bikes to get around, often over long distances. I'm sure my dad and grandad who both knocked about on bikes didn't where specialised clothes.
I think some poor devils are more prone to saddle soreness and others just get a tougher hide down there maybe.
Personally I find that cycle specific trousers help a bit - Swrve have a sort of gusset. But I still get chafing from the pants if I go over 15 miles on a warm day, if that's not too much information...

The bonk - when you least expect it
If I eat anything sweet around lunchtime onwards I can almost guarantee that I will bonk horribly on the ride from work to home at around 5:30. That's without riding hard and after only maybe 1 or 2 miles. In fact, I have found that I sometimes bonk around that time before getting on my bike if I have had something sweet earlier!
Weirdly, in other circs, I never bonk. Even after a day in the saddle say on a sportive or audax.
Anyone else have this experience?

Re: Riding no-hands
There's a lovely photo by Henri Carter Bresson of a track rider relaxing by pedalling his fixie around with one foot on the handlebars, using both hands to read the L'Equipe newspaper. There's a similar pic of Coppi going around the track drinking a cup of coffee with a saucer in one hand, but that one's too contrived!

Monte Carlo bike hire
Does anyone know if it is possible to hire a bike in Monte Carlo at a realistic price? (I'm not hopeful as I have never seen anything else on sale there at a realistic price - but I have to go to a conference and it would be handy.)

Wall hanger - any nice ones?
I would like to hang a bike indoors but would like an attractive and/or discreet hanger. So the whole thing looks pretty. Any ideas welcome.

Re: Breaking in a Brooks
I gave up on mine. I know people swear by them. That's why a I wanted one. I thought maybe it is because I only weigh 9st. But I couldn't make a dent in it. Sold it looking like new.

Re: Mapping for Garmin
Thanks for that tip. I will try it. Whereabouts on the device does the file turn up? (I need to retrieve it from my son, an oceanographer, who is used to survey software etc. I'm hoping he can figure it out for me... )
