Re: Helinox Chair 1 review

+1 for the Chair 1 - Mrs B4t and I have had ours for a few years and make good use of them although the 'feet sinking in soft ground' can be an issue, especially if like me you leave one of the leg end stops in the ground after pulling the leg out and not noticing the detachment! If I were buying ag...

Re: What gilet for summer?

I'm glad such innovations work for you hardy types (of which I used to be one until my thyroid gland mis-behaved) but the warmth from the RAB was what I needed - and I know what I need having been taken from a mountain-side with hypothermia some years back - (that was not fun) - and having been clos...

I seem to have to replace the UN55s rather frequent and certainly more often than I recall in the past.

Re: Reassurance needed: Bikes on BA flights

A tale to tell: > Two of us flew BA from Gatwick to Genoa, Italy on 30Jun16 for a 1000 mile cycle camping trip back to the UK > My bike was in a standard cardboard bike box obtained from my LBS (necessitating front wheel and pedal removal, handlebars turned etc) > My friend also had a cardboard bike...

Re: What gilet for summer?

I am the OP of this thread and thank you to all respondents ..................... I will update this thread when I return from my Alps descent later in the year to let you know how the garment was. Now back from the trip - so an update on the RAB and how I found it: > I cycled over the St Gotthard ...

Re: Android tablet and gpx file - navigating

Having now completed the 1,000 mile / 19 day ride back to the UK from Genoa, here is the update I promised: The DG700 performed wonderfully apart from when I left it on the handlebars in the hot sun one lunchtime (ambient temperature about 34DegC and the phone is BLACK) and the LocusPro app lost con...

Re: Route from DFDS Terminal at Dunkirk to Ostende

I came through Dunkirk to the DFDS terminal last week - we tried several times for a quiet route but there were issues with key bridges out for maintenance or restricted/controlled access to certain docks (the route indicated by bohrsatom being one such area unfortunately). The screenshot of the tra...

Re: Across the Alps - Best Route to Take?

Just got back last week from cycling from Genoa to the EV5 near Milan then to Dunkirk (Dunkirk rather than Calais to avoid any possible problems with immigrant camps although in reality there's probably no issue with going via Calais TBH). We crossed the alps over the St Gottard pass using the old r...

Re: Handlebar Mount for Phone

Hi folks I'm in the market for a bar mounted phone carrier, the one below looks good (but not cheap) has anyone tried it or got a better option? http://holdersandmounts.co.uk/herbert-richter-adjustable-full-swivel-bike-handlebar-mount.html Thanks and regards Iain I've not tested the above specifica...

Re: Pannier sold as single item

I like Altura products - they don't have the same kudos as something like Ortlieb but with the exception of that Ortlieb City Roller in the above post, are generally cheaper and certainly lighter. Have a look at the Altura Arc Roll Top pannier - here's an example of a nice red one for well under £40.

Re: carrying a phone in the summer

The phone I use has a 5" screen so is on the large size and can be bulky in pockets so on those occasions when not cycling in clothes with suitable pockets, I use a clip-on holder of the type shown in the pictures below widely available on eBay for under £10. If your shorts have belt loops and ...

Re: Travel by train with bikes and luggage

If it were me I'd be phoning pubs, B&Bs, Citizens Advice, Farmers and so on in the area I was looking to park, to see if they or anyone they knew, could offer you parking at a modest price and to which they could keep an eye on your car. What about those 5-unit small campsites listed by the Cara...
