Re: Smaller compact chainset

I second Brucey. Middleburn will do it - I have that combination, but its not inexpensive! Very good quality.

Re: Touring possibly the South of France along the coast

Well the trouble with this coast is that, in the main, a main road follows it and if you want to get off it it can be very lumpy. I found getting round Monaco and into Nice quite busy. True the promenade of Nice was nice but it soon ran out on the western side. Having ridden the velodysee as well I ...

Re: Police comments about Box Hill and cyclists

So if the police ignore it the locals will complain. If they ignore tacks being put down the cyclists will complain (or someone might get hurt). If, as suggested above, they just arrest a few to make an example then everyone else will complain: that they are picking on cyclists; that they are using ...

Re: faroe islands anyone toured there, how did you get there

An interesting query. I have often thought it to be a place to visit but not necessarily with a bike. I thought you could once get there via the Shetlands but so many ferry routes have now gone.
I for one would find interesting any update on your successes or otherwise.

Re: Question for seasoned tourers

In Spain you can be miles from anywhere. In the 1980s riding between Madrid & Lisbon my companion was very glad that we had taken a crank removal tool as it would have resulted in many mountainous miles walking in great heat.

I did it from the Med to the Atlantic 2013 and after heavy rain some of the track was very sticky. Although most of the time my full sus was overkill you can see why it made it more comfortable and inspired more confidence.

Re: Experience of La Vélodyssée/ Eurovelo 1

Thanks Beekeeper,
I did it in July and found some less than perfect surfaces. Although full sus was overkill it was comfortable and helpful in the circumstances shown after heavy rain. This is my camping kit on the bike.

The definitive one is the one you make up at home at leisure from the maps in the booklet. That is what I had to do.

Re: Bike delivery service - Virgin BikeMagic

Agreed BUT if say you wanted to start a tour from Cape Wrath with a recumbent and intended to ride back to the South it may be possible but almost impossible using normal train methods. They have at least agreed to look at it.

Re: Bike delivery service - Virgin BikeMagic

Had a reply already. They don't know and hadn't considered anything other than a bicycle. Will discuss it at next planning meeting (both the insurance aspect and non standard cycles). At least they admitted they hadn't considered it. I might have expected CTC to have asked as they advertised it to us.

Re: Bike delivery service - Virgin BikeMagic

I've written to them for further clarification. The CTC weekly newsletter suggested it but didn't add any extra info or caution. £50 limit for insurance seems farcical?

Re: Rim "buttons"

My wife's Dahon 20 inch folder was plagued with tyre deflation issues when we first got it, despite little use. I found the good old standard of cloth rim tape was the answer - it just had a softer feel to it than the plastic ones it came with.
