My wife has a similar set up to you on her tourer Peter and yes, the older Suntour front derailleurs are the way to go. She has an X-1 and it works fine. Tiagra is a 'road' component: don't know which Tiagra Front Derailleur you have, but the minimum ring size seems to be 30 for the triples. Are you using friction or indexed shifting?
