The 2011 Toggle Chain Tour will be on Saturday and Sunday 11th & 12th June.

There will also be qualifying rule changes for 2011, which will be announced after the Committee (that's me an' Mike, that is) has finished thrashing them out. Any bikes that qualified this year will still do so

Any hints for those of us currently building?!

On another note, does anyone know of a source of cloth bar tape in various colours? Ideally the thickish stuff.

I know you're looking for an FM hub; would I be right in thinking this is going to be a drop bar 1950's clubman style machine?

Spot-on. It's the only thing that will do justice to it I feel. Being anal, I'm trying to go as period-correct as I can. I did manage to find out from the Frame number & original colour that it's actually a 1959/1960 (Frame number puts it just about into 1959) Golden Hurricane.
I had a "deal" worked out for an FM hub (1959 one as well :-/) built into a nice constricter rim and the guy mucked me about a bit, which has upset me quite a bit! I'll keep looking, but after my last foray with wheel-building, I ideally want a complete wheel!

GrahamNR17 wrote:Tim2, I thought you were going to just use it as-is for the winter and restore it next year?
I did that with the Clubman, it's almost impossible to look at a bike that needs TLC and 'just use it'

I couldnt leave it alone, it needed work to get it rideable and then I took mercy on it & decided that if I was going to strip & re-build the bottom bracket and headset, I might as well give it a coat of paint.. I'm starting to wonder if the bike is cursed though, the rear wheel deal I had fell through, I missed out on bars on fleabay by 2p, and the paintwork has failed miserably - due to it being so damp in the yard last night I suspect.
Came to the conclusion this morning that if it's worth doing, it's worth doing properly, so it's off to the blasters tomorrow  - Decals are on the way too!

Re: togglechaintour bikes

Really nice photos, nice to see them at last, seems like the TCT was 100 years ago :-(

I've been quite busy the last few days, not had a chance to do anything until Cathy gave me free rein this afternoon..

Started out with this, which you've all seen already:

Then I did this to it:

Before doing this to it:

Lugs have gone Ivory/Cream(ish):

and the frame has about two-thirds of a coat on it.. No photo of that though as between us Cathy & I cocked up and inadvertently used a tin of matt paint!

I got mucked about trying to acquire a rear wheel, so still looking for that, as well as bars, brakes (and levers) and toe-clips!

GrahamNR17 wrote:I've decided to sell the James. I like it a lot, I just think I can build something similar but do a much better job, but next time with much lighter components and a lighter 531 frame, tighter "racy" geometry and X-RD5 rear hub to make it more useful.

Reckon I should just "ask a price" for it, or take chances with an auction?

Roughly what might you be looking for it?

Project Codename: "Oh Christ, this is going to cost more than the Triumph did!"
Frame & Forks were seen in a local Cafe (Look Mum No Hands) and after much mulling over, decided to have them.. Turns out it was Rob Sargent selling them (http://www.sargentandco.com)

In the words of Rolf, have you guessed what it is yet?

Weinmann front rim, laced to early 60's Milremo large-flange hub came from Ripley..

As did all the stuff on the table..

Williams cottered chainset, GB Hideminium stem, french pedals I've forgotten the name of & Lucas double bell :-)

Re: togglechaintour bikes

Right, before I hit evilbay & the wanted sections, I thought I'd ask you lot for the parts for the new Project, Codename: I'm not telling you what it is yet!

I need ALL the following in no order:

Lauterwasser bars,
Sturmey FM hub (ideally dated late 50's onwards)
27x1 1/4" 40 Hole Rim (ideally early-mid 60's Weinmann)
Late 50's-Mid 60's Center Pull brakes.

Pictures of what I've been stupid enough to buy after I've been to collect it later this afternoon ;-)

London? You mean, actually cycle in London?

Graham, wots a bit scared

Indeed!
I've got two routes in mind as possibles, covering roughly 15-20 miles each.
There is a great route out east, on the north side of the river, down to Greenwhich, then following the river back up on the other side. Very little traffic going out east and the south-leg is all on river cycle paths & goes past some wonderful sights, loverly pubs etc!

The other goes west, starting out roughly from Westminster, heading over towards battersea, down along the river again and then back up through Chelsea and Kennington.

Personally, I think the East route is nicer and more interesting, I'll try and cycle it again in the next week or two as I've not done it since Marchish!

Glad to hear you are still with us Ade, I dread to think what the wake with your Aunt and Uncle in law could have been like ;-)

I've been somewhat busy over the last few days, so have only just had the chance to sort this lot out!
