Re: Fixed wheel bike no brake?

Why any cyclist would want to ride a fixed wheel bike without a brake or brakes on the public highway is beyond belief and any sensible reason.

Re: Comfortable touring shoes

Depending on the budget, but I bought a pair of these after a recommendation from this very forum.
To say I've been impressed with the comfort from day one would be an understatement. Superb quality, from the very first day I used them they've been so comfortable to ride and walk in, I don't think you'd be disappointed with a pair.

Re: Using a Garmin705 whilst being charged

RickH wrote:In short, Yes.

The longer version...

Early firmware for the 605 & 705 didn't allow for charging on the go. That was changed with an update somewhere along the way. If you have kept your 705 updated then yes you can charge it & use it at the same time. If you haven't, then you probably can provided it isn't running early firmware.

Do bear in mind that, with the variability of the output of a solar panel, if it stops charging there will be a "lost power" pop-up that will need to be dismissed each time it appears (on later devices the message disappears after a few seconds).

A more reliable off grid solution might be a power bank to provide power, or two - one powering the 705 & the other being charged from the solar panel. If you don't need power for anything else then a moderate capacity one, say 5000mAh, would give several days of power for a 705 from full.

And if the sun doesn't shine enough there is always the possibility of charging power banks, as well as the Garmin, via the mains from time to time.

Thank you for your information, I have kept it updated so I'll give it a try.

Using a Garmin705 whilst being charged

As the titles are can this bed done? I've had the 705 for a few years and it's never let me down. I'm off to France in June touring and it'll be used every day for two weeks, so is it possible to use it whilst being charged with a solar charger or similar?
Thank you

Front pannier rack

Apologies in advance if this topic has been covered.

I'm looking for suggestions for a front pannier rack to carry my tent (3kg) hopefully across the top rather than on the left or right of the pannier. Or if there are any other options available, I have a rear pannier with a pair of carradry bags plus a sqr bag (which is actually a tight fit) hence the reason I'm looking for a front rack.

The tent is a hoolie 2 etc.

Many thanks

Since reading your recommendation for MapsMe I've tried to install it on my phone to give it a go. Two days later it's still saying download pending.

Third finger left hand

I've been cycling using a road bike for many years, sometimes cycling over a hundred miles a day and I have never experienced anything other than the usual sore legs from a good ride.

My dilemma is just before Christmas I treated myself to an 1980's retro Raleigh Thunder Road mtb. I've only had the time to do two rides of any distance on it one 40 miles and today one of 32 miles. On both occasions I've experienced numbness in my third finger on the left hand!!

It's my intention to cycle tour on this bike in the summer carrying all my kit and for longer distances.

I appreciate the geometry of the Raleigh is different but what could be causing this numbness? The first time it took over a week for the numbness to go away.

Would fitting bar ends help ?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Re: Via Michelin, how accurate?

HarryD wrote:Don't know about France but I know a number of routes suggested by via Michelin for cyclists are not possible on the ground in Spain. Have heard of others ending up on fire roads and extraction lanes when following suggested routes in Germany and France. However, for distances and general planning it is a good start

Have a look at cycle.travel/map. Designed for cyclists by cyclists. Also gives profiles and climb. Easy to use and fine tune

Had a look at cycle.travel, it looks like a very useful site some great information available, suggestions for the campsites are useful too. Thank you

Via Michelin, how accurate?

Plain and simple, as the title says how accurate is the Via Michelin app using it as a way to ride through France?

Looking forward to the replies :D

Touring shoe recommendations

I'm used to riding road bikes with spd sl cleats but I've just bought an old Raleigh Thunder Road and hope to do a tour around France with it next year.
I wanted to use spd pedals so I can use them to walk in. I like the classic look of the giro republic road shoe and I've also seen a pair of arturo leather shoes, the problem with these are they are not spd compatible shoes, so do I go for a toe clip and strap combination with a traditional pedal.

Any recommendations, advice or other options?
Thank you

Casati Vinci Suitable Tourer

I own a couple of bikes one of which is a Casati Vinci. I'd like to do a bit of touring on the Casati it has rack mounts on the rear but my question to anybody with the knowledge is the rear stays are made from carbon so what weight could I realistically hope to carry on the bike using panniers. My intention is to cycle for a couple of weeks in France taking a lightweight tent, sleeping bag etc, etc.
