Indicators for trekking (butterfly) handlebars

Hello, again :)

Anyone use indicators on their bike? I've had a couple of instances where the road's been particularly poor and signalling has been a nightmare because controlling the bike/changing down has been difficult with just one hand.

I've had a quick look on Amazon and all I can see is a mirror/indicator set that clips onto the end of a handlebar - no good if you have drops/trekking handlebars. There are no results for this in the CTC shop either.

Anyone looked into this in the past or use/d these?

Thanks.

The best one we have used so far that works well with a loaded touring bike is the Pletscher Multizoom Rear Mount Kickstand definitely worth the 340g of extra weight!

Thank you! I have been looking for a quality stand for a couple of months.

Re: Numb lower back

Went for a fitting a couple of weeks ago. They raised the saddle slightly and raised the handlebars a lot. They also check the positioning of my cleats. £10!

My riding position is far more comfortable. I've also been exercising - the 'plank' and stomach crunches and together the exercises and the fitting have made a massive difference. I did a 30mile ride last Sat and experienced minimum discomfort.

Thanks again for the help and the advice.

Re: Numb lower back

Thanks, folks

My saddle height is at the 'optimum' height for leg/pedal length. The lowest position on the handlebars are an inch below this. The handlebars are of the trekking (butterfly) variety.

And, no - this numbness has only occurred near the end of the longer ride.

I've contacted a reputable company in the area so will wait to see if they can help.

Re: Numb lower back

Never been 'fitted' for the bike. I use a Dawes Karakum - plenty of scope for adjustment of seat and handlebars. I'll find a place that will help me with this - although I've read about it, I don't really understand how to work it out and make the correct adjustments.

Thanks for the reply :)

The load is in panniers.

Numb lower back

I use my bike to commute to work each day (16 mile round trip). When I started (about two months ago) I experienced a slight numbness in my lower back. This soon went and now I don't experience any numbness at all on the commute to/from work.

Yesterday I took my bike out and did a 28 mile trip spread over 3 hours. The first twenty minutes involed three steep hills and remainder of the trip comprised mostly flat ground with the occassional low hill.

Near the end of the ride I reached back because my back felt sore and realised that my lower back was numb again. I stopped and sat on a bench for about 5mins and the numbness disappeared.

I've had a look around the net and although I have found some information about sore lower backs and how this may be alleviated by strengenthing the 'core' muscles, I could not find anything relating to numbness.

Anyone have any thoughts about this, please? I don't want to bother my doctor with it if there is something I can do to prevent it from happening again.

Thanks.

Re: Cleats and shoes

Thanks for all the replies, folks.

I bought some Exustar shoes. They are great and I can walk in them without looking like I'm drunk :) So long as it's flat, the cleats don't come into contact with the ground at all.

I can't return the road shoes as the soles are now scuffed, even though I only used them for a couple of weeks.

Re: Cleats and shoes

Thanks for your helpful replies, folks.

My problem was that because I have never used these before, I did not know what to look out for.

I'll check out some Shimano shoes and make sure I get some that have a recessed cleat area.

Full ack on the size hints :)

Cleats and shoes

Hi

I just bought a pair of cycling shoes. What I did not realise (because I have never used cycling shoes before and did not know what to look out for), was that there is no recessed area for the cleats. I attached SPD cleats to them and while the shoes/cleats perform very well, walking is impossible because the soles of the shoe are mostly flat. There are two raised ridges at the heel and one at the toe, but this does not help because the shoe 'rocks' over the cleat. I feel as though I am going to fall over :) And, of course, there is no grip on the pavement.

Any one know of a reliable make that has recesses for the cleats, please?

I don't want to be in a situation where I need to wheel my bike over any distance as it will not be possible wearing these shoes. Also, just stopping and popping into a shop would be a nightmare as I'd skid from one end to the other :D

Thanks!

Help with distinguishing bike size in CTC shop

Hi

I would like to buy this bike from the CTC shop.

However, the sizes small, medium, large and variations thereof are not exactly illuminating. Can anyone shed some light on what the sizes mean, please?

I'm 6' with a 33" inside leg so have no idea whether medium or large will suffice.

Thanks!
