The sooner they build it, the better.

Cornwall and South Devon are basically a long branch-line at the moment, without any versatility. The line up from Plymouth/Horrabridge/Tavistock/Lydford/Okehampton is all available except for a short stretch just outside Tavistock where it crossed the A390. They'll need to put some bridges back where it crosses the A386 and the A390.

I think there's only one house on the railbed here at Tavy. You can see the course of the railway.

The rest of the railbed, including the tunnel and viaduct at Shillamill south of Tavy is all good and clear.

The stations enroute are private homes now, but it's chicken feed. The Tavistock Station area has housing and council offices on the site.

The route from Okehampton to Exeter is already in use.

Granite Way cycle track? - get rid of it and reinstate the railway.

+1

The rail connection is far more important for the people of Cornwall.

Re: Return from The Lizard

Thanks - as PNZ looks like the best option, I'll probably come back to PNZ the day before and get the earlier direct train to Durham.

Return from The Lizard

I'll be doing my variation on E2E next summer and will be finishing at The Lizard after LE as I'll be visiting my best friend and cousins down on the peninsular. I'll be returning to Durham on either the 10am train from Penzance to Durham or the sleeper to Paddington and then KC to Durham.

Depending on which train I get, which is the best station to catch it from if coming from Ruan Minor or Coverack?

Re: Quiet Lane

The first designated Quiet Lane in County Durham was Pontop Pike Lane about eight years ago. I cycle or walk it almost every day - in fact, I got back about twenty minutes ago.

It is certainly quite well used by cyclists and walkers during the summer months. It doesn't get a great deal of motorised traffic - I can often cycle (or even walk) the mile and a half along the lane to and from the C2C and see no vehicle until crossing the A693.

Fortunately, it doesn't have rumble lines to shake me up! Mark - if you hadn't said the lane you were on had rumble lines, I almost thought your photo was looking west to the top of PPL.

I believe it has a 20mph limit but if there were ever any signs, they have disappeared.

Re: Train fares

I use http://www.eastcoast.co.uk regardless of the company and have an alert set to email me when fares are released so that I get the cheapest.

Looks to me like the cheapest option would be separate bookings Stockport-Plymouth and then Plymouth-Penzance. Leaving on a Friday morning when the cheap tickets are released, I've managed to find it for £51.

Even going via London, it shouldn't be more than £70 - cost me much less than that going from Durham in August. You can book the FGW sleeper on eastcoast but if you want a birth rather than just a seat, that has to be done on the FGW website.

Should this road have a parallel cycle path https://www.google.co.uk/maps/preview#! ... !2e0&fid=5 hell no; it's a perfect cycling road as it is.

That road could certainly be improved a great deal for cycling - remove the centre line impose a 40mph limit - give it a more country lane feel.
The sort of treatment you see in the Peak District or New Forest.

But really, it has no significance whatsoever for utility cycling - it is simply to far from where anyone lives or works.
And as for a "perfect cycling road" that all looks a bit hard work to me - it maybe OK for the young and fit hardened cyclists who think nothing of climbing 500m Northumberland hills into a headwind - but not for the 4 year olds - or the timid old ladies that are repeatedly claimed to justify the need for segregation.
w that is a place where a segregated route could be built. There is plenty of cheap land available and virtually no junctions

Should this road have a cycle path? https://www.google.co.uk/maps/preview#! ... !2e0&fid=5 yes! There's lots of fast moving and industrial traffic and there's already sufficient space it just needs using.

And generally, roads like that will now come complete with segregated paths - eg:
https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=alderl ... .66,,0,3.5
Complete with the usual lethal arrangements round the huge cycle hostile roundabouts at either end.

However, this road is again irrelevant to utility (or even leisure) cycling. The road you show is a by-pass. For motorists it is worth choosing a route 50% longer if they can drive at twice the speed. Cyclists will choose the more direct route:
https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?saddr=Un ... 5&t=m&z=15
The way to improve conditions for cyclists in this case is not to build a cycle path following a long detour, but to use the fact that through traffic has been removed from Leadgate to downgrade (from a motoring perspective) the streets within the village.

As the C2C route runs through Leadgate parallel to the road (with a row of houses in between), I would think it a complete waste of resources to build a cycle path parallel to the by-pass.

Given the amount of traffic usually on it, no point on that road at all. Although I haven't cycled it yet, I've often driven the 20 odd miles from Nenthead over to the east of the Derwent Reservoir and not seen another vehicle.

Re: C2C in two days

The record for the C2C is under 8 hours!

The last 40 miles east from the top of Crawleyside to either Tynemoouth or Sunderland is virtually downhill the whole way. The short section between the Jolly Drover at Leadgate and Annfeld Plain has been much improved this year - pinch points have been removed and the surface tarmaced.
