Re: Your best ride of 2018?

Without doubt it was on 6th July this year in blistering heat when I did my first century ride, from my house in Swadlincote to March in Cambridgeshire (basically using Sustrans route 63). I left home at about 6:05am, arriving in March at 4:41pm (including 30 minutes in Oakham for lunch and an enfor...

Re: 'your supposed to give way to cars'

One man said to me, "You have no rights on the road because you don't pay road tax." Recognising the car he had (same as my own) I replied, "Neither do you". It worked and he drove away. The law is quite simple, bicycle riders have an absolute right to be on the road, no if or b...

Re: Car lamps

Have you tried changing a bulb on some modern cars? Batteries sometimes need to come out, headlamp and grille off, Torx fixings on rear lamp clusters The bumper has to come off followed by the headlamp on mine (Jaguar X-Type) takes at least 30 minutes, pain in the backside. Back to the O/P, I've no...

Re: Road Bike and Cycle Tracks

I am allowed to ride the roads correct? Yes, cyclists have a RIGHT to use roads (except motorways) whereas drivers of motor vehicles are ALLOWED to use them under certain conditions (ie MOT, License, tax insurance etc). The provision of cycle specific infrastructure such as cycle lanes, in no way d...

Never paid for a "service" on a bike, I do it myself, a chain and cassette should cost less than £20 for the vast majority of bikes.

Re: Weird interactions with other road users

What she should have said was "You need a longer stem" :P That's a bit personal.... Actually I wasn't "wobbling all over the road" at all, I was merely cycling up a hill from a standing start. All cyclists tend to wander off line a little due to the lack of speed making balance ...

Re: Weird interactions with other road users

Having been the victim of a very close pass, I spoke to the driver when she stopped 50 yards up the road. I suggested (politely) that she should give more room to cyclists to which she replied that I was "wobbling all over the road" (I was going up a hill). Good reason to get within a foot...

Not that I'm not actually trying to do this but I'm on 8.9 miles a day (my commute is just under 12 miles there and back), I'm probably going to end the year more or less where I am now.

Re: Should you have lights on during the day?

In answer to the O/P.

Definitely No - unless it's peeing down with rain or there is a covering of thick black clouds. Pretty much the same as for motor vehicles I would say. The only exception would be if you're going through a tunnel on one of the former railway line paths.

I think all motoring convictions should come with a mandatory retest with the driver's licence being downgraded to Provisional until the test is passed. That would make a few drivers think a bit before they drive like this.

Re: Distracted drivers

One morning whilst on the M42 between J11 and J10 (2, lanes full of vehicles doing about 60mph), I happened to glance to my right to see a bloke shaving. He was using both hands, using the driving mirror as a shaving mirror and steering with his knee.....

Re: Yorkshire's reet grand - We love Yorkshire

I grew up around Collingham, Boston Spa, and Wetherby (not the posh bits of any of them!). I always preferred Sam Smiths. The Taddy Porter, mmm... It was pretty well all John Smiths round where I grew up, horrible stuff but there was little choice. They bought out the Barnsley brewery in about 1971...
