Re: Gear cable sticking or what?
One thing I am suspicious of is that the rear derailleur is sticky, and doesn't tension the chain fully for a second or two after an upshift. I had similar symptoms to the OP when the grease in the B pivot dried out. It felt ok when articulated by hand, but was less reliable under it's own spring t...

Re: What fork
I have the Thorn 853c forks on my Spa Audax. They're a good looking (I don't like the look of the unicrown used on the Condor's), well made, lightweight fork, but they do not offer any miraculous improvements in ride quality - the original Spa carbon/alloy forks were more compliant.

Re: Non-indexed downtube shifters on 10sp
Not tried 10 speed with DT shifters, but my experience with 9 speed is that both pure friction and indexed levers work well, but the 'micro-ratchets' on the Dia Compe ENE shifters are fractionally too coarse for reliable up-shifting. YMMV of course...

Re: Spa Audax build photos
Mind you, we've had puzzles like this before. A few years back we spent ages trying to understand why the Thorn Audax frame weighs. 2.3 kg and the Spa under 2 kg. when both are supposed to be made from 0.8/0.5/0.8. What's more if anything the Thorn stays should be lighter! True. Perhaps both brands...

Thanks Samuel. Interesting!
Not that a few grams makes any difference to me at all - I just like to know what I'm riding...

Re: Spa Audax build photos
I've recently built up a 54 Audax frame which weighs 58g more than a larger 56 frame which i had before (978g vs. 920g) . Are those accurate weights? They both seem on the low side to me. Sorry missed the '1' off the beginning (now edited). As to accuracy - no, not a calibrated scale, but the same ...

Re: Spa Audax build photos
If I had to guess one way or the other, I’d say the bigger frame feels stiffer.. Did you weigh the new (58) frame? I think Spa may have changed the tubing on the 725 Audax? Re: Overinflating tyre to make rim explode
Depending on the geometry of the rim, an iwanson gauge may not always show the true picture.
The rim below showed c. 0.75mm (edit) when measured, but the reality was a lot less. Unbelievably it hadn't failed despite being paper thin, but I certainly got my money's worth (H Plus Son TB14)

Re: New wheels or rims
I've built up a couple of pairs of kinlin xr31s - rim thickness seems to compare with the archetypes. c. 1.6mm and they're just weighing in at sub 500g. they're tubeless compatible but gp4000s can be fitted by hand.

Re: Gilles Berthoud Aspin saddle
Worth the investment - and i'm 'careful'!
mine has small dimples after 10k miles, maybe a little spread, but no where near the extent of an unlaced B17 after similar mileage (even a good one).
it's comfortable enough to go totally unnoticed - the mark of comfort imho.

Re: Never using an adjustable torque wrench again!
I assume the torque spec' varies with how/if the thread has been lubed (dry, oil, grease, anti-seize etc..) is a c. 20% tolerance enough to cover this?

Re: Threadless headset servicing - would you bother?
i'd want to disassemble at least once a year to check the condition of the steerer anyway, so repacking the bearings whilst it's in bits is a no brainer..
