Re: Mud flaps

Cutting plastict to size works well I've even used a plant pot! Works very well - keeps the muck of the chain ( wheels)

Re: Resting of cycle against closed shop

As I've stated its not about parking in a front garden.

The shop had a direct frontage onto the street

Re: Resting of cycle against closed shop

The last post probably sums up the situation best - my bike was doing no damage and unlike the last post no-one intervened on my behalf.

On a more personal level i realised recently that the railings near my house ( which I thought were part of my property ) are actually owned by the local council. Even if mine I would not object to a bike being locked to them as its safe

Re: Resting of cycle against closed shop

I'll run a little experi. this weekend between cycling everywhere I'll wear my tweeds and fours and have a stroll along that street.

I'll then don my h.v. and stroll back.

Yesterday when pout with the CTC a bunch of 10 of with various variations on hv were certainly not spoken to in the same way when resting our trusty steeds against various cafes railings etc.

Remember -indicate , its free, painless and helps others

Re: Resting of cycle against closed shop

I could not agrewe more re give and take after all the shop was not being used and if it had been access was not blocked.

If I had been spoken to more politely or even friendly its a lot harder for me to react in a contrary manner

Re: Resting of cycle against closed shop

Paul,

Thanks for your reply about propstands but I'm abit worried about what would occur -could the bike not be pushed over?.

The post wasn't meant to cover gardens - this is not the situation which occurred

Re: Resting of cycle against closed shop

My apologies, I was aware that the area designated as the highway may not be in public ownership - this was covered in an earlier post.

Yes my feathers were ruffled I suspect my comments about high viz are valid and if someone wants to quote a legal opinion i would like to reply in kind.

After all if I had been a pretty young thing with a wicker front basket would I have prompted the same response?

Incidentally, if you are cycling past a countryside property which ahs stone delineating the verge that is not an automatic indication it is the boundary of the property and the associated legal rights which go with it. (This from my surveyor father who ona number of occasiosn advised householders of their right to complain about him surveying theie property when it turned out to be part of the highway -ie not part of their property.

Re: Resting of cycle against closed shop

It was a general reply not in repsonse to one particualr post. Overall we're no further on (some) s'keepers seem to want to behave in a certain way as I do as i wish to keep my cycle safe.

Thisd si based on pure conjecture but I suspect if I ahd been dressed in a manner more pleasing to the keeper ie not dressed in high viz they would not have spoken to me in the way they did.

You may well own the property but you do not ( well you do in the sense you as amember of the public ) own the highway

Re: Resting of cycle against closed shop

I fail to see why you should object to a cycle being rested against a wall In a garden yes and obviously not against a wall where it might damage something or if there is alternative space available.

I wouldn't mind it being rested against my wall and locked. If you really want a bike ( vulnerrable to theft / interference - eg one inadequate decided to nick the front derailleur and rendered it useless during the attempt ) made easier to nick so be it. I'd rather keep it within eyeshot and as safe as can be.

The nearest cycle stands are about 200 yards away and outside a friut machine emporium - every so often the council take away the bikes with a wheel missing and twisted froames which are locked there.

I visit peopel as part of my duties at work are you seriously saying I should not rest my cycle against their or a neighbours wall?

Re: Resting of cycle against closed shop

I'm not clear how this would lead to a propensity to be subject to an ASBO - after All all I would like to do is to keep my property safe.

Re: Resting of cycle against closed shop

i WAS looking to respond to the s'keeper in the manner they talked to me.

I'm not quite sure how the link to ASBOs comes about - which would you consider ruder taking a common sense pragmatic attitude - ie keeping my cycle safe and within eyeshot ( so I can monitor some inadeaquates attempts to open panniers ) or obeying a s'keepeer who I feel may have taken objection to my high viz jacket. The latter point is of course pure conjecture but unfortunately for them they have no control of who walks up and down the street.

There are no cycle stands on that particular street - maybe there would be too many people with high viz jackets...

Re: Resting of cycle against closed shop

i'm unsure as to whther or not a prop would -i had 2 reasonably heavily laden panniers.

Blocking access is certsinly impolite I wouldnt have a problem if someone left the bike up against my wall. I would rather they secured it to the railings ( which incidentally are not part of my property - I discovered this when I had the deeds search done ).

When another enlightened individual told me to move my bike from railings ( no Napoleon remark aspirants here ) my dad ( a surveyor with Somerset County Council) advised me the railings were probably part of the highway in the sense they were part of the footpath.

I really would like a legal answer to this one way or the other if anyone knows it

Re: Resting of cycle against closed shop

Cycleruk, as I stated it was not blocking access. It was leant with consideration, but unfortunately this was not good enough for the shopkeeper.

It was leant there as there was no other place to lean it all the other shops were open- indeed one on the other side as I now recall did not mind when i explained.

Tanatab. There was no kerb to rest it on also are you absolutely sure that the fact that it was leaning from the public highway has no bearing?

Thanks for your replies anyway

Resting of cycle against closed shop

I would like to know if anyone knows the answer to the following.

This morning I was very firmly told by a shopkeepr that they had exclusive possession of their shopfront in the sense that I was not allowed to rest my cycle against it ( the only part which was resting was the Altura pannier).

No damage was done to their property. Access to the closed shop was not barred and there did not seem to be any actibity within the property. My cycle was parked on the street ( the public highway)

The shopkeeper felt they did not pay rent to have a cycle rest against their property i said I wanted to keep my cycle within eyeshot.

Is the shopkeeper correct - there were no cycle parking facilities within eyeshot?
