How does that bungee hook arrangement work?
I can't get it to secure satisfactorily to my Blackburn EX-1
My Altura panniers had a plastic hook that slid over the vertical struts.

Re: In praise of cheap bikes...
I have this Rockrider 5.2 bought last year on clearance for £180 - 6061 gusset welded frame, Altus 24 speed mechs shifters and brake levers - SRAM chain, Suntour chainset, Rigida wheels, Joytech hubs, Spinner forks, Cane Creek aheadset.

Mom has this:

Their bikes are super VFM and half the price of the big named brands with the same kit.

Re: Square taper chainset – to grease or not to grease?
Alloy crank - steel taper. Two different metals can react together and fuse just the same as a stuck seat post. There's pleanty of info on stuck posts. If the crank gets stuck you end up stripping the threads when you try to use your crank puller.

Re: Karrimor Panniers Any Good?
I have some waterproof stuffsacks somewhere in the house, should do the job.
They're not going to see any major action, just day rides and the odd weekend trip.

Karrimor Panniers Any Good?
I have been looking at the modern budget panniers, some as low as £7. Wasn't impressed with the quality.
I was offered a set of old Karrimor panniers for £15, they seemed quite popular in their day.
I bought them anyway.

They seem to fit with my 20 year old tourer better than a cheap new set.

Re: my next bike ... which one?
I bought a Giant Defy 4 for long distance rides. Takes a pannier and full custom fit Giant mudguards, 25c tyres, cr-mo fork, triple chainset.

Then picked this steel tourer up second hand

The earliest I could find was this Ridgeback catalogue from 1990
There's a lovely Ti MTB - wonder how much that was in 1990
