Re: Romany Touring Bikes - ever heard of them?
Wheels are Araya Alloy (single wall) VX-300 (made in Japan) 32 spoke on Deore LX hubs, rear drops are 135mm. Not the strongest but not too bad for light touring.

Re: building a single gear bike from a mountain bike frame
I had the following issues with this (my first SS build)
Ran a 44T front with 16T rear (not good on a heavy MTB frame) The new wheels were narrow rims and the canti brakes would not reach properly.
I split it up again and used the bits on something else.

Re: Romany Touring Bikes - ever heard of them?
BB feels smooth with no play so it'll stay put until it needs doing, if I upgrade the drivetrain I'll put in a new one. I'm going to get it back on the road for the rest of winter and then see what happens in the summer as regards re-paint and new bits. Going to retape the bars, install new cabling and pop another chain on (got a good 7 speed SG Shimano one in the shed somewhere). I'll put new bearings in the hubs when I get round to sorting the wheels.

Re: Romany Touring Bikes - ever heard of them?
I'm fairly new to touring. I've been out with my local CTC a few times but only day rides up to 70 miles. I've done 100 miles on my road bike in a day but it only weighs 8.5kg. I've never ridden a loaded bike. I've seen photos of some of the fully loaded tourers, looks a little scary. Watched Mark Beaumont's docus and the Hannibal tour from Spain to Rome, so may give it a try when the bike's sorted.

Re: Romany Touring Bikes - ever heard of them?
M550 Deore LX dates 1990-92, so 20 years old.
Funny I was going to buy a new Ridgeback Voyage at Langsett Cycles, but saw this first. The guy who sold it lived about 2 miles from Langsett Cycles.

Re: Romany Touring Bikes - ever heard of them?
I rubbed off some of the dirt at the base of the seat tube, it's a Tange - 'Designed in England - Made in Taiwan' a little disappointing as I wanted a GB frame, but still double butted TIG Cr-Mo

Cheers
I googled around a bit and got the same results
I think it's going to be one of the old Madison Freewheel bikes.
I'll post some pics when I collect it.

Romany Touring Bikes - ever heard of them?
It's a 1990s vintage (hooded brake levers with downtube shifters, triple chainset, canty brakes.
I've been after a tourer for a while, but have never come across these before.

Absolute trash
When new battery lasts 30 minutes only, as it gets older and after a few recharges it diminshes rapidly
Turns itself off at random
No clear indicator of when it is recording, just a tiny internal red/blue light
Contour HD or the HD Hero cams are the only way to go for video
