Re: How it's made - wheels.

The episodes shown on Quest (UK Freeview ch37) have English narration.

The one that shows how titanium is made is very interesting. 15x more expensive than aloominum

Re: Late Era Steel MTB

These look like early V brakes because they take post type cantilever brake blocks. Would say they're original as there's no canti hanger on the seat stays.

The groupset is Shimano Tourney entry level stuff with EF28 shifters and TY30 chainset. Rodi rims though :D

Rides nice.

Re: Late Era Steel MTB

Wonder if the ladies model was called Titania

Anyhow, apart from some new cable inners and rim tape it owes me less than a tank of fuel for the car, about 300 miles

Late Era Steel MTB

Picked up this oddball MTB today going cheap

Daft name for an MTB

Townsend (Not the best make in the world I know, I remember their first MTBs from the late 80s)

When I saw the picture in the ad I thought it was aluminium with the big tubes and welds, then I noticed dropouts looked like stamped steel. It did indeed turn out to be oversized steel tubing.

The V-brakes take post type canti brake blocks, never seen these before

Shimano STI shifters, cup and cone BB, 7 speed freewheel, 1 inch quill stem 22.2mm insert, single wall alloy rims.

Looks almost un-ridden, those are the original amberwall tyres :o

Bought it in case the snow comes back, should be a good slush basher.

Re: 20 inch Wheel Road Bikes

I had one of these for a while. JE James were clearing them out at £250 so seemed a bit of a bargain.

Quite nippy, but gears a bit weird. Got bored of it in the end and sold it in favour of a folder

Re: Cheap Bike for Lon Las Cymru

Loads of cheap hybrids out there

Trek 7 series, Specialized Globe and Sirrus are popular. Giant's Escape models are also good, Halfords' Carrera Subway is good if you want 26 inch wheels and used ones can be had for £100.

Most of the above come lightly used except if they've been doing the daily commute (avoid these if possible).

Good V brakes are better than cheap disc brakes, something else to bear in mind.

Re: Building a Tourer

Buy second hand and upgrade worn components

These Dawes Horizons go for a lot less than the Galaxy, you can upgrade the spec to Deore LX, XT etc.... if you want to. £200 should get a tidy used one. Shimano's road and MTB stuff used to be interchangeable but the newer stuff isn't always compatible so check carefully.
