Re: Does anyone own a Garmin edge touring?

My suspicion is OSM classify perfectly rideable A roads as ‘Highways’ and the Garmin detours round them. Anyway, I’m not shelling out until I’ve witnessed a Garmin Bicycle GPS plot a route as good as a TomTom Rider. That may be never. Well they may be with the Navteq mapsets which Garmin sell. You ...

Re: Does anyone own a Garmin edge touring?

@hexhome - but there should be enough space on the SD card shouldn't there? (Genuine question). Of course but my point was that you don't have to buy a card for the Etrex 20/30, there is enough memory installed to download 3 maps onto the unit. You can choose between cycling, tour cycling and mount...

Re: Cyclist charged withGBH

Here's a tragic comparative example from yesterday in which police have confirmed no arrests have been made Whilst not wanting to detract from the poignancy of your point. Assuming the motorist stopped and gave full details there would be no need for an arrest at this stage. A NIP may well have bee...

Re: Does anyone own a Garmin edge touring?

The big failing with navigation algorithms specifically for cycling, is there are 1,000,001 cyclists all with a different opinion of what roads are safe and which roads aren’t. To please everyone is a task without end. My personal opinions of what roads are safe and which roads aren’t don’t agree w...

Exactly my conclusion. There may well be a bigger step up with the next generation of models.

They are both current models. The 30 has extra features, those being; compass, barometer and ANT+ connectivity.

Re: Does anyone own a Garmin edge touring?

A couple more thoughts on this. The Edge Touring looks cheap. I think that the white casing is the culprit, but also the increase in screen size is not matched by an increase in resolution so to an Etrex user looks 'thin'. This of course is just appearence, I am sure that it is as capable as the Etr...

Re: Does anyone own a Garmin edge touring?

I don't own one but have played with one extensively. It works well but has no advantage over an Etrex 20 with free OSM maps installed. Indeed I would say that an Etrex 20 is superior in some ways. The main advantages of the Edge over the Etrex are; slightly easier integration with Strava, lighter (...

Here in Hexham an excellent bike shop has also closed. A combination of high rents, long lease agreements and purchasers of web sourced bikes expecting cheap repairs.

I'm using a 1981 front derailleur with 'modern' 8 speed. Works better than all my fellow riders mechs who bought new bikes in the last three decades :D

Re: Saddle Bags

I have a Carradice saddlebag permanently attached to my saddle. Looks good, is waterproof and very practical. For short days out it carries my waterproof, repair kit, pump, loose change, keys, snacks etc. It has enough space for a day or two 'credit card' touring. I wouldn't be without it.
