Re: Repairing a tyre tread - Schwalbe Marathon

this method is ok if there is a 'flap' left, but when said flap is missing or its a tiny slit??? I have has some success in the past with slits, using that black roofing mastic , its rubberised, extremely sticky and flexible. It won't stick it together, but it plugs the hole, and stops water getting in.

Re: Changing stem height - change length?

http://yojimg.net/bike/web_tools/stem.php

A very, most useful website, where by you can put in your head angle, and choice of stems, and see how, the difference in reach and height .

EG 73 deg headset,,

stem 1) 100mm -7 deg on 30mm spacers

stem 2) 90 mm +7deg on 10mm spacers

Whats the difference????????????????????????

well stem 1, is 1mm higher and 10mm more reach.

Ah, that’s what happened. I remember your write up on a similar ride through Kent, and thought someone had done something similar on a similar bike. Have they really copied your write up?

Edit, yes they did , didn’t they. ????????

In all seriousness, if it comes to a choice of pain and not riding, I can wholeheartedly recommend a touring recumbent,

Re: Having a break from riding in winter

I ride all year round, snow 'n'all, but I've just had 3 weeks off, due to being busy, and having had a really bad, lingering cold, seemingly contracted at a BHPC race, (chilly wind). Also been down in Cornwall for a week, struggling with cliff top walks, and wheezing. Yesterday I had a double flu and covid jab session. Today went for a short ride, and struggled with 22km.. So yes,it's nice to take a break, but it does you no favours in the end. Best keep going all year.

It was the end of a sponsored 500mile ride from Niagara Falls, Canada to Portsmouth, New Hampshire raising money for a local orphanage. The ship I was in at the time - HMS Sirius - was affiliated to Portsmouth NH because it was built in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England.

Raleigh Clubman bought in Dales Cycles Glasgow in 1983, sort of "gearing modified" by me.
Swapped to a Stronglight 99 double with custom rings ............. still have it with a variety of extra rings and it was used on Mercian ............ and I fitted a Campag Rally long-cage rear mech to it.
It’s amazing how ‘not’ stretched out you are, compared to modern geometry. Fashions, hey, who needs ‘em.

Take a look at scaffolding mesh, or debris mesh.

You can find it in MUCH smaller quantities elsewhere, but this is an example. I did think about building a streamlined fairing from it.

Re: Lighter Spa Touring build

Ianwhitwell wrote: 3 Sep 2022, 10:52pm Hi

I was looking to buy an 'everyday bike' that I could use for occasional touring and visited SPA to try their Wayfarer. I did like it, but they didn't have my size in stock and after many months of waiting ( covid and Taiwan, from what I can gather). When I rang up the last time the owner suggested I try the 725 Elan, and I could put a steel fork on it for front panniers. This I did ( Spec below) and I've had it a couple of years and have never regretted the purchase. I would def go and try one out if your interested, they had a big range to try.

My spec to cover daily rides and tours with full panniers. I specifically wanted a front triple, but they had some excellent double ring options as well. I liked the fact it was almost like a custom build (frame excepted)

Do you still have the motor assist, or have your ‘legs’ returned.

Re: Your favourite cheap and easy gains

My gains seem to come in a financial way. Basically keep your eyes open. I seem to regularly find things on a ride, quite often money! A few months ago, I found 2 five pound notes in the verge on a lane, so I thought ….hmmmm, I wonder how they got there, and were they blown about a bit by traffic/ wind, I’ll just have a look on the ‘other’ side of the road, and sure enough another fiver and a tenner ! Whoopeedoo! A year before another tenner about a mile further up the same road, a £20 in the bushes on a local cycle way, twice. A Lezyne usb charge front light, numerous phones, tools, waterproof jackets , Nike running tops, fruit, etc. Also Most of my cycling kit is either old, second hand or free, ie had it for years because some stuff just never wears out, or forum stuff that is silly cheap secondhand, and that doesn’t wear out either, eBay stuff that is cheap (retro acrylic tops, I like, because the are retro and they are much longer than modern tops, and I am tall.) And free stuff, well the amount of stuff people on forums give away is amazing, tops, shorts, shoes. I’m no snob when it comes to kit, I run 7 speed with friction bar cons on my disc brake tourer, ……spend money …pah. :D

Re: Is there any point in cycling?

This post reminds me of a chums wife. He has type 1 diabetes, and ‘can’t be trusted to go out on his own!’ Which is a fair point , as he needs constant nagging to check his bloods, and eat sweets when we go out for a ride. He enjoys it immensely, he is quicker than me, but his bike is prob half the weight. Anyway, his wife, a miserable sort, says ‘ any form of exercise , that doesn’t produce anything, is a waste of time !’ Hmmmm. Once, we were gone a little longer than expected, and it was the hottest day of the year, he ‘was in trouble’ with ‘her indoors’. When I casually said, that he had enjoyed himself, and it was good for him to get out, her reply was ‘ Bo!!*cks!’ Some people just don’t get it.

Re: Stomach Issues on Long Rides

Being perfectly blunt......perhaps you need a much bigger No2 before the ride, ie one when you first get up, then a secondary 'drop' before leaving the house. It's amazing what a number 2 No2 can produce. The nausea can be simply the fact that you need to go, and the toxins are building up in your body. You say 100km is fine, but do you then have a 'drop' soon after?
Some folks are regular, which is very useful, others are completely random, which is not so useful, in situations such as this. Me, I am awoken daily at 'bowel'o'clock . Told you it was blunt.
