Re: tandem rear free wheel ?????? help
Vision, a recumbent tandem maker from the USA, used to make IPS cranks which allowed either captain or stoker to stop pedalling. I understand that they could be retrofitted to ordinary tandems also.

Re: Rohloff great ratios on 20" wheels - Bottom gear.

Re: Historic Tour de France Route
L'Union des Audax Francaise organised an Audax in 2003 that basically followed the original route and a similar timeframe. Only 1 or 2 Brits rode. It was a group of about 100 riders with lead and follow cars, scheduled at 22.5km/h riding average, so the mostly major roads weren't too much of a hassl...

Re: seat height when your legs differnt length
My partner has a leg length difference and has different length cranks on some bikes (SPD pedals) and uses spacers under the cleat on other bikes (Look pedals). No problems during up to 17,000 miles annually.

My partner's Phillips battery taillight died after a few months. Disappointing as it was otherwise a favourite.

Re: ... whether there are any female frame builders?
Schwinn, the USA-ian Raleigh-equivalent, had a custom department where the Paramount frames were produced. Back in the 1950s or so, all of their Paramount framebuilders were women.

Re: Bar end levers - why?
With bar end shifters, I know what gear the bike is in at night. Judging by the amount of cross-chaining I see on other bikes after dark, STI and similar have a major disadvantage.
