Re: drop handlebars or straight bars for touring ?
I have just fitted a pair of Salsa Woodchipper mountain bike drop bars. Will let you know how I get on with them. They should give the variation of hand positions plus the extra width for easier breathing.

Re: Newbie - wants to Tour and lose weight before hand
I am new to touring, last year we did our first tour, Normandy from LeHavre to Cherbourg, it was our best holiday ever at 56. I found doing the Couch to 5K program helped build up my stamina. Just Google CT5K, download the tracks put them on your ipod and get out, they are free from NHS Choices, I'm on week 5 again this year and if you do this with cycle rides on alternative days you will soon be ready to go. I would recommend picking a couple of local campsites to make a loop of say 75 miles and then you will be near home and be able to checkout all your gear. Once you have done this weekend it will boost your confidence. Last year I dropped 5 stone from 18 to 13 stone (up to 15 now) and would not suggest trying to loose a load of weight too quickly, I did and just end up with no energy. Hope this helps.

Re: Loitering within tent
I have an unused Vaude Taurus Ultralight tent, which has been put up in garden, but never used. This weighs in at 1.9Kg. The RPR is (according to internet) £295, would take £150 for it complete with footprint. I bought a Terra Nova Laser Space 2 which suits me better.

Re: "AHEAD" BARS
I had a similar problem, fitted an extension to the steerer which looked to me awful.
I had a piece of steel tubing machined down to fit into the top of the fork. 4 holes were then drilled through the top of the fork and with the extra tube held firmly in place with (an extra long bolt through the star fangled what not) 4 welds made into the holes to join the new piece in and finally the welds ground down.
Some extra spacers and I have what I want almost (would rather have a slightly bigger frame).

Re: Best tent for touring
Bought a Terra Nova Laser Space 2 http://www.terra-nova.co.uk/Brand/Terra ... ace_2.html from the internet after reading bits about this tent on this forum, list price is around £600 but by looking around internet we paid just over half this figure. We have just returned from our first tour in Normandy of 2 weeks. Big enough to put 2 bikes in out of sight plus all panniers in the porch area if you wanted to or to stand up in to change, cook out of the rain, sit on tools to read etc. Tent is huge, stood up to quite high winds and heavy rain yet weighs just 3kg. For 2 (older) tourers I can't fault it.

Best route St Malo to Cherboug
Hi, this is Mrs printerjohn. We are planning a cycle touring holiday in France this June and thought Cherboug to St. Malo would be good. Can anyone suggest a nice quiet on road route with campsites.

Re: I'm looking for a tent..help appreciated
I have just bought a Terra Nova Laser Space 2 from http://www.upandunder.co.uk in their sale for £299 (sorry it was the last one, though there is a new one on Ebay for £340 at the moment). I have pitched it and 2 bikes fit into the porch. It has a lot of headroom and is just over 3Kg. Have yet to see how well it handles strong wind / storms, but it has plenty of guying points so I think it should be fine.

Ultegra Hubs on a Galaxy
I have a Galaxy with rims & tyres that rquire replacing. There are a set of built wheels (Mavic 719 with Ultegra 6600 hubs) for sale. Would my 9 speed XT M770 cassette fit onto this hub and would the wheels fit into the frame? Relative beginner hoping this is something I could do my self. Or would it be better to just have the rims replaced with new tyres onto my XT hubs. Thanks John
