Mrs Lab Rat saw then bike in the front porch last night on her way to bed. 'You appear to have aquired a new bike, isn't one enough?'

Re: that the 'ultimate commuter' is back

Picked it up this evening and it seemed fine on the quick trip back from Halfords which is only a mile from my house. Wife's reaction was 'You seem to have aquired another bike, isn't one enough?'. I'll try it on a run to work later in the week. As for any belt conversion - I don't plan to do anything on that score for at least year so as not to invalidate any warrantees.

Re: that the 'ultimate commuter' is back

I have decided to get one as well - to buy the Alfine 8 and disk brakes on their own would cost more than that. Not sure yet if I will just keep it as a spare bike, use it as a loaner, upgrade it to belt drive or use the parts off it to up grade my Trek Soho. Looking forward to seeing how the Alfine 8 compares to the Nexus 8. The other hub gear system I want to try out sometime is the NuVinci N360 - I know there was some discussion on here when it first came out has anyone actually got/tried one? If the NuVinci is as good as it sounds I'll put that on the Soho then probably convert the Subway to belt drive.

Re: Brompton carrying a Brompton

How about fitting a bracket to you rack that you can bolt the front forks of the secong bike into after you have taken off the front wheel - which is put into a second bracket for the job - and tow it like a trailer bike?

Re: My Bent , bent and ICE came to the rescue

I had my fairing for the weather protection properties - particularly keeping feet dry in the rain. Angled right will deflect the worst away from your body and face. As for lighting I had a twin halogen light set (can't remember the make) and mounted one on each front mud gaurd at the fixing point with the bracket. I had to fit longer cables to reach the switch and battery and I replaced the 6v lead acid battery with a 7.2v NiCad battery for RC models.

When I had my Trice Explorer and decided to get the Streamer fairing for it Trice insisted on sending me a replacement front boom with the right fittings on FOC.

Re: Another pump question.

I had to fish mine out the bag this morning to quickly top up the front tyre - it almost gets lost in the bag it's that small. Incidently Mick - I've noticed since I have fitted green slime smart tubes to my bike the tyres don't need topping as much, I assume the green slime makes the tubes much less permeable?

Re: Tandem - First Ride

Still hoping to persuade Mrs Lab Rat to try tandem riding sometime. I have only had a short go before as a stoker on an Ostrad back-back recumbent, many years ago now.

Re: what bike to get?

The Carrera Subway 8 does look to be a good buy. I am still very happy with my Trek Soho after one of commuting.

Probably best to treat them like any other hazard if you are not sure and walk the bike over.

Re: Bikes on car roofs - good idea?

A bit off topic - in the film Splitting Heirs' two Frenchmen on holiday in the UK have their bikes upside down on the roof of their 2CV and it gets rolled and then carries on along the road one the bicycle wheels with the Frenchies hanging upside down.

Re: that the 'ultimate commuter' is back

I saw this on the website a month or so back when a friend at work was thinking about cycling in and I thought I'd look out a recommendation for her. I was almost tempted to get one myself just to get the parts off it to upgrade my Trek Soho. Since then I have a few other ideas and I am currently cotemplating putting my own ultimate commuter bike together - Gates Carbon Belt drive, NuVinci N360 hub gear, disc brakes and cytronex electric assist. Got to find a bike with the NuVinci hub on to test ride first though, same for the Cytronex assist.

Re: Advice/Suggestion on Road Rage?

I have recenty reported a case of dangerous road rage driving to my local police backed up with helmet camera video. I was given a report form to take away and fill in and before I had the chance to return it was contacted by the police to get a few more details. I was told the helmet cam basically counted as a reliable independent witness and could be used to secure a prosecution if that was what I wanted. I said that although locking up the driver and throwing away the key was tempting - what I really wanted was for the drive to be persuaded to change his attitude and driving behaviour to show more respect for other road users if someone could have a word in his shell like. The police duly noted this request said it would be passed on to the local beat officer to do in a quiet moment. In summary, if you have an independent witness, the registration of the car and the time, date and location, the police will probably be prepared to take some action but you do need to report it as soon as posible.
