Re: Hope in Israel/Palestine

Apologies for diverting this thread again but this is a deeply moving and distressing film detailing Israel's war crimes, their use of human shields and pictures of dying starving children are particularly hard to watch.

Why is is this not on prime time TV!!!

Re: Hope in Israel/Palestine

Perhaps they'll expose the full level of America's external rendition and torture programme or prove that tapping Angela Merkel's phone wasn't a one off?

Re: Hope in Israel/Palestine

Yup, I speculated in a previous post that Israel have obtained dirt on the US and is using the threat to release this as another lever to keep the US onside

Re: Hope in Israel/Palestine

Too many rich pro-Israeli donors to both the UK and US governments and in control of media messaging.

A single Israeli soldier killed today gets a personal mention and photo on the BBC news - no photos of the hundreds of dead Lebanese or thousands of dead Gazans.

Re: Ongoing Bottom Bracket Issue with Trek Checkpoint Gravel Bike

Just to add to the many suggestions; I had an intermittent click that I was convinced was the BB but was eventually traced to the bearings on one of the pedals after a suggestion from this forum.

I rebuilt and re-greased the pedals and it went away, never to return.

Re: Hope in Israel/Palestine

Israel seems to be content to be a paranoid, aparthied, oppressive, settler/colonialist, militarised state with no desire to live at peace with either it's neighbours or it's indigenous Arab population.

With this attitude where do you even start?

If the 'follow the money' priciple applies then maybe the BDS initiative might work. An initiative that Netanyahu clearly fears having already described it as antisemetic.

Re: Hope in Israel/Palestine

I think Israel will enter Lebanon because this is a once in a lifetime opportunity while the US can't stop them - because Biden knows that to stop Israel would lose the democrats the presidency.

For a detailed anaylsis I'd recommend this:

The US, the UK, the world's media and the ICC judges, to name only the main players, are all complicit in letting this continue.

Putin's arrest warrant was issued by the ICC within 2 weeks of the application to the ICC, it's been 4 months since the application to arrest Netanyahu went to the ICC judges and we're still waiting

Re: Hope in Israel/Palestine

Most of the commentators I've read think Iran/Hezbollah are trying to provoke Israel into a land invasion in Southern Lebanon because last time that happened Israel lost. A few rockets, periodically might just do the trick.

Why oh why oh why, in this age of computers that can do everything, did they not simply introduce a sliding scale of winter fuel payments biased to be more generous to the less well off? No cut-offs, just a simple continuous algorithm.

It would be fair and help the most vulnerable, you might even call it a 'socialist' solution.

Re: Climbing techniques

Sit and spin, but riding a recumbent this is the default option  However I've found that changing cadence by dropping or upping a gear every now and again introduces new muscles and is akin to periodically climbing out of the saddle.

By this means the long climb from Exeter to Haldon Forest is genuinely easy, even on my heaviest recumbent.

Re: UK Politics

This latest incident brings back memories of an astonishing incident at my last job.

A group of production line workers had chanced upon a list of all the companies employees and their salaries mistakenly posted in a public folder by a company accountant. Every person who even looked at the list over someone else's shoulder was hauled before HR and given a final written warning.

If we require this level of secrecy to prevent an insurrection, we need an insurrection.

Re: Swapping fibre broadband for phone network…

Having just been through 4 weeks offline getting a new fibre installation I think I will now just take out a series of two year contracts jumping provider every two years to take advantage of introductory offers. The expiration of an introductory offer combined with the government agreed annual escalator means that staying with one provider just gets prohibitively expensive.

The only downside is going without internet for up to 4 weeks on some of the switch-overs as routers are returned, new ones despatched and Open Reach do their stuff.

Re: Why does Trump lie so much?

Just look what Trump's continual lies have done. This is from a Guardian interview with Janet Jackson when asked about Kamala Harris:

I wonder where she stands on the forthcoming election. After all, I say, America could be on the verge of voting in its first black female president, Kamala Harris.

“Well, you know what they supposedly said?” she asks me. “She’s not black. That’s what I heard. That she’s Indian.”

She looks at me expectantly, perhaps assuming that I have Indian heritage.

“Well, she’s both,” I offer.

“Her father’s white. That’s what I was told. I mean, I haven’t watched the news in a few days,” she coughs. “I was told that they discovered her father was white.”

I’m floored at this point. It’s well known that Harris’s father is a Jamaican economist, a Stanford professor who split from her Indian mother when she was five. “My mother understood very well that she was raising two black daughters,” Harris wrote in her book The Truths We Hold.

The people who are most vocal in questioning the facts of Harris’s identity tend to be hardcore QAnon-adjacent, Trump-loving conspiracy theorists. I don’t think Jackson falls into that camp, but I do wonder what the algorithms are serving her. I start again. Harris has dual heritage, I say, and, given this moment, does Jackson think America is ready for her – if we agree she’s black? Or, OK, a woman of colour?

“I don’t know,” Jackson stage whispers. “Honestly, I don’t want to answer that because I really, truthfully, don’t know. I think either way it goes is going to be mayhem.”

James O'Brien's "How they broke Britain" documents the same sad story of how truth no longer matters :(

One case was a medic treating someone who was blown up by one of those devices, while treating the victim the medic got blown up by the pager he used for his job. It has happened and is being reported. It is clear enough that the pager bombs were not targeted bombs.
It's the coldly calculated brutality that so disturbs me. The pagers make a noise so that the victim picks it up and hold it to their face, then it explodes. Everything I've read about the apartheid Israeli regime, that sees the Arab race as sub-human, is confirmed by this act.
