Re: Space

Yeh, I'm currently watching "Radar Men From The Moon",1952 kid's Saturday film serial. Commando Cody and his jet rocket back pack, tin helmet etc.
That's proper space travel, sparks and smoke, no pressurisation, real seat of the pants stuff, not the wimpish Branston rubbish! MM

Re: Inflation, Covid related shortages or profiteering?

Hi, Then of course with many listed buildings there is the problem of the right mortar? Not that I'm up with it all, but a chum of mine actually got into how to make the ancient lime mortar, which many need to employ. Apparently it "Breathes" differently?? MM

Re: The Italian Job

Hi MickF, Wake up boy, concentrate! A "Mk1 Vauxhall Viva"? Dat be "HA", then came a "HB", followed by a "HC", Vauxhall never used the Mk tag.
Then they did the Chevette (Yuk) tag, weak, to sound like "Chevrolet Light"! Why not go back to Victor, Velox, Wyvern, Cresta? MM

Re: The Italian Job

The connection? Being in the wrong gear is poor roadcraft!
Unless one is driving an automatic, where kick-down applies, being in too high a gear does make for a dangerous overtake, especially if the vehicle being overtaken is a pedal cycle.
Just think of how many times a driver struggles to get into the power band if they haven't changed down the box, far to often for my liking.
Being in the unsafe zone for the shortest time is the optimum position. You know that makes sense. MM

Re: The Italian Job

Hi folk, Pre-WW2 Rileys had various types of gear-boxes, never pulled them apart so slightly vague? Some models had straight cut boxes, sporty ones for better power transfer. Then they ah the wonderfully named "Silent 3rd Box", it really was quieter in that gear" Then a couple of Pre-Selector Variants, a Wilson model and a Armstrong-Siddeley model.
None had synchro 1st's. Back then folk took pride in actually learning to drive through the gear-box properly, even on down changes? These days folk are taught to avoid engine braking, but to use the brakes to reduce their road speed, hence far too many drivers do poor overtakes due to being in the inappropriate gear!
At least cyclists who use derailleur gears find proper use of anticipated gear changing to be a vital skill. TTFN MM

Re: CTC Holidays and Tours to Cease Trading

Dear sensitive Tiggertoo, I didn't realize that I by trying to keep as active as I can whilst enduring a litany of medical issues, many of which by themselves would call a halt to my cycling. I try to get through with humour, in a self deprecating way, but you would appear to take it upon yourself to be the arbiter of what is acceptable, or not, in the broad spectrum that is modern cycling.
Your rather narrow outlook would certainly deplete the ranks of those who attempt to keep mobile in a cycling sort of way, maybe because you have been fortunate enough not to have been hit bit serious medical issues?
My cycling circle includes a fair old mix, oops, multi-age mix of individuals, many with issues such as loss of a lower limb, or loss of the use of an upper limb, blindness, paralysis from the waist down, CP and many other issues! They just get on with doing the best they can within their limitations, grin and bear it sums it up!
I object most strongly to the behaviour of a minority of people who ignore sensible controls over vehicles which may be used in safety in society, some folk don't give a toss about such limitations. So we face an uphill battle to maintain our place on the road. Illegal E:Scooters, over wattage E:Motors on cycles, even a local idiot who uses n E:Unicycle? I jest ye not, even rides it in pedestrian areas!
I've toured with the Pilbeams on a number of occasions, with Pam riding her leg powered cycles, then at other times with an E:Assist motor, as I say some of us need help.
If you don't Bully For You. But if the need should arise in your life that you find you need to get a little help, then you may come to see a more tolerant view is required? If the terrain is suitable I might use one of my leg only powered trikes, if it looks lumpier then the motor-assist trike will get the job. What you won't find me astride of is one of the "Fall Over" type machines, the ubiquitous Bicycle, forgot to mention I have balance and hearing issues as well, can't hear how loud I talk, hence the Mersey Mouth Sobriquet! Gobby I am , Stupid I'm not. Pax MM

Hi Mobile :D , Here's a first - I agree 100% with that post  . That load of tosh over message deletion is pure "Testicles"! They knew exactly what they were doing.
Such an act should never be achievable when using an official means of communication, be it phone, fax, e:mail or old fashioned snail mail!
Surely that is being "Economical with the proof"? MM
