Re: Lockdown for over seventies?

I have to shop for food but so far the local shop has been quiet any time I have been in so no problem with close contact. Also I try to get only what I can carry without a shop basket so no contact with unclean handles. The shop door is self opening so I can get in,shop and get out touching only pl...

Re: Vitamin D - how much?

I get regular blood checks for all sorts of things. My liver function is just on the verge of not good. My latest batch of bloods showed a deficiency of vitaminD so I am now on a 90 day course of colecalciferol( vit D3) 3200u. Does not mean much to me but it is apparently the highest off the shelf a...

Al-yrpal I often disagree with what you say but at times like this petty differences can be put aside. My heart goes out to you as I know only too well how you must feel.

Re: Parking on the pavement to be banned!

In Oban coming off a ferry I very often use a narrow street which is two cars wide but parked solid up one side and you cannot see the exit end. Somebody has to reverse round a blind corner if there is something coming the other way. So far I have not had to do this but I notice a lot of the deliver...

Re: Contemplative cycling.

I usually cycle on my own as much more relaxing. In the past my wife had no problem going at my speed but then we had plenty practice cycling together. Going for a walk is something I miss as I cannot go much further than about a mile without pain due to a spinal problem. Could take pain killers I s...

Re: Coronavirus (aka COVID-19) - just how serious?

While hand hygiene is important the anti bacterial stuff is surely useless against a virus. While washing will help I doubt that at the moment anything will kill the virus. The important thing is not to transmit it to vulnerable parts of the body and the face is always mentioned. It a long time sinc...

Re: Strange way to pay

Not a card but my iphone7 needs a 6 digit code on startup and then fingerprint which does not always work.

Re: Ancient lanes and old main roads

Loch Creran to be pedantic. On the proposed off road cycle route south of Duror I think there has been a change of ownership which may be complicating matters. From Appin Station there is apparently a path up to the cafe above Castle Stalker but I have never managed to find it. It is probably easier...

Re: Low frame/step through bikes?

I have some spinal problems which mean I cannot reliably get my leg high enough to get over the saddle without the risk of falling over. I get round this to get on the bike in question if there is no handy kerb to stand on by laying the bike down and stepping over before raising the bike up. Obvious...

Re: Emigration

I have to talk to a GP about test results but the surgery office can tell me if they have turned up or not to avoid wasting time. If I phone between 0800 and 0900 I will be seen the same day. I can specify which doctor I see but due to a succession of locums I often have no idea who they are from th...

Re: How to Remove Oil from Gore Dayglo Yellow Jacket

My dayglo jacket has got a bit grubby. When anyone points out any of the stains I simply tell them that it shows I am a real cyclist and oil staining is inevitable.

Re: Sunday strict observance on Outer Hebrides northern isles

My impression as well dodger and I have also visited the Lewis Black House which as you say would quickly pickle you. Some Black Houses have been restored for use as holiday homes and a hostel but the peat fire is no longer in the middle of the floor. I was brought up as a Free Presbyterian and inte...

Re: Sunday strict observance on Outer Hebrides northern isles

Mikymo I think the houses you’re refer to as Black Houses were actually White Houses. When I visited family in Lewis they lived in perfectly reasonable houses and the black houses were tumbledown. The new ones were called white as just a description of the style rather than anything to do with colou...

There are no Wee Wee Frees. I presume you mean the Free Presbyterians or perhaps Seceders?

Re: Sunday strict observance on Outer Hebrides northern isles

Cyril Haearn you should read up the history of the Presbyterian churches in Lewis to get the terminology right. The Wee Frees are not the same as the Free Church which tends to predominate.
